Digital camera Review: A "must have" for beginning your SLR lens collection

This was my first lens purchase beyond the one that came with my DSLR camera, and so far I am very happy with the results. It delivers beautiful portraits, crisp closeups at maximum aperture, and the bokeh is astounding.
I've seen other reviews that say this lens has a "toy" feel. While it is true that it is lightweight, rather plain in design, and does not have a metal mount, the materials feel quite solid and in my opinion should stand up to normal useage.
The focusing motor is a bit noisier than my original "kit" lens, but no more than should be expected for the significantly lower price.
But the bonus of being able to snap clearly-focused seemingly shake-free shots in limited light conditions makes this lens almost a necessity for any photographer who cares about being non-intrusive and wants to avoid using any flash devices or extra lighting.

This was my first "L" lens of the series and I have Canon 50D. I have to say that the marriage of the 2 were just instant!
The minute I got this nifty fifty out I was so excited and could not beleive the quality i was getting! It put me on the map as a photographer!
I was using this little monster on photoshoots and now I am getting some good paying dollars for it! The f stops are perfect. I use this predominantly for portaits, families, events, you name it! I take this little tiger with me everywhere!
For those who are questioning L'Series Lenses by Canon just try this one and if doesn't work for you then you can always return it!

I love this lens! I purchased it even with mixed reviews on many different sites! I think it's a great beginner lens. I don't feel as if it is too cheaply made, but you do have to be careful of it. I use a Canon XTI, and have been looking for a good (and affordable) portrait lens. I teetered about this lens for several months before finally ordering it. I read all the reviews on Amazon, as well as researched this lens on the web. Money IS an object for me, as I am getting my business off the ground. My lens arrived this week. I didn't have a chance to put it on my camera until today. All I can say is WOW! Despite it's "cracker-jack prize" plastic feel, this lens takes a killer picture.
I shot cheerleading portraits of my daughter this afternoon, and I have to say, these are the best shots I've taken, yet. Impressive for a lens so inexpensive.
I also spoke with a fellow professional last week, after having ordered this lens, and he said he loved his; had another on order, because it fell out of his pocket & came apart in two pieces when it hit the ground, but loves the lens in spite of its plastic construction.
I would recommend this lens to anyone on a budget. My advice, though? Be careful & don't drop it. (But I'm extra careful with all my lenses, and don't see this being a problem.)
