Digital camera reviews of Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens

Digital camera Review: A Must-Have for Amateurs!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just purchased this product several days ago and I'm already in love with the improved image quality of my 50mm shots. Shifting from my newer Canon Rebel Xti with kit lens to this is like night and day. The bokeh in images comes out like I imagine when lining up the shot, and the fixed length makes me want to keep this lens in for all walk-around shots.

Taking others' reviews into consideration before purchasing, the lens does feel rather delicate ( ~ 1/4 lb.); but please also remember, it's also < $100. No other lens of this price range (new) falls into the same category. Bottom line, get this lens if you wish to change your beginner DSLR experience from that of the kit lens. For portraits and landscapes alike, you can't go wrong with the 50mm F/1.8!

Digital camera Review: A Newb Photographer's Review
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this lens to mate with my XTi and so far I have had no regrets. It does take some getting used to with the fixed focal length, but it definitely gives you an idea of composing and framing that a normal zoom lens might not give you.

This lens is just great for so many reasons. The cost was definitely attractive to me since I didn't feel comfortable spending a ton on pro-level lenses. It works phenomenally well in low light, especially when compared to the kit lens. The build quality itself is excellent, though the materials do not really seem to be meant for longevity. Metal > plastic, no matter how high quality the plastic. Focusing is a bit loud, but worked fine.

The lens also lowers the profile of the camera and makes it more manageable and less conspicuous. It's hard enough to get people to act normally with an SLR clacking away, but with this lens your subjects don't really have to worry about you zooming in on their imperfections. Overall, this lens is highly recommended for new photographers.

Digital camera Review: A budget prime for the rest of us
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this to add an inexpensive fast lens to my gear. It provides great optical quality. I took off one star because of its cheap build. I have used Nikon 50mm f1.8 AF lens which sells for similar price which has much better build quality.

Digital camera Review: A double treat
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this to go with my original EOS-1 film camera. 50mm has been the standard lens that others are judged by for decades. I had everything from 20mm to 600mm and was a photojournalist.
When I reluctantly went digital I was pleasantly surprised by the field of view change. The REAL portrait lens for 35mm was the 85mm 1.8. With the limited compression it has the same perspective as the human eye.
When put on the digital camera, the field of view is 1:6 compared to the 35mm. That bumps the lens up to 80mm on a 35mm camera. It's the perfect portrait lens for using available light. There's an intimacy to available light you don't get with flash. I can go just about anywhere and it's fast enough to shoot with ambient light. Focus is fast and sure. It's light as a feather.
The lens is plastic but unless you plan to use it as a hockey puck, I don't think you'll have many problems. And you can buy 2-3 for the same price as the 1.4 version.

Digital camera Review: A forgotten lens in a world of zoom
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used Canon for years, and so it was a bit of a surprise to me that so many people recommended this lens, the least expensive lens (I believe) in Canon's lineup. but WOW, the things you can do with this lens!

First of all it is fast. 1.8 gives you so many options in terms of low light capabilities, as well as a shallow depth of field. I have found it great for taking pictures of my children, macro photography, and lots of other uses.

This is a small investment, but is a must-have lens for anyone who wants to hone their photography craft.
