Digital camera reviews of Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR LensDigital camera Review: Excellent lens for the price. Summary: 4 StarsI received my lens this morning, and have spent the day trying it out. Overall, I am very happy with it. The photo quality is very good, ease of use is also very good. I am used to using Canon's jewel-like FD lenses from years ago, so I am a little put-off by the build quality of this lens; but when I consider the low price I guess the build quality is decent enough. I have noticed just a bit of play in the Auto Focus mechanism: if I lightly twist the front of the lens from left to right or vice-versa, it turns just the slightest amount and the front element will extend or retract a small fraction of an inch, changing the focus I assume. But in operation I haven't noticed any problem with the focus, it appears to be spot on. In dim light this lens still auto-focuses quickly. Also, this is the first Canon lens I have received without an instruction sheet, I suppose that could be a problem for someone without any knowledge of Canon's IS and AF/MF systems, or how to mount the lens. I do appreciate the relatively small size and light weight of this lens on my rather heavy Canon 40D camera (compared to my Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM lens). This lens will probably become my new walk-around lens because of weight and size.
ADDED: This is an EF-S mount lens, not the same as an EF mount lens. An EF-S lens can only be mounted on cropped sensor Canons; an EF lens will work on cropped sensor and full sensor Canons. Also, there generally are fewer accessories available for an EF-S lens. For example: I do not know of any teleconverter made by Canon or any third party that will fit any EF-S mount lens; but they can be found for most 'longer focal length' EF mount lenses. (Canon's teleconverters will only fit L series EF lenses, and not all of them!)
Digital camera Review: doesn't give a good image stabilizer Summary: 1 Starsi bought this lens because i was needing a not expensive short lens and i thought this one could work good because of the image stabilizer. but when i don't use it as a close up the image is kind of blurry and not to mention that for portraits if very hard to get eyes on sharp focus. So i will not recommended this lens.
Digital camera Review: Nice lens! Summary: 5 StarsThis is a quality lens, it can do everything you need, even to get your photos published. I now have > 10 photos published using it in top scientific journals and books. Owned mine for < 1 yr now, it's great for the price!
Digital camera Review: works great Summary: 5 StarsI bought this lens to go with our Canon Digital Rebel XT. It works great.
Digital camera Review: Great universal lens Summary: 5 StarsCanon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens I purchased this lens based on a recommendation. From the start it opened up a much greater range for my photographic experience, a terrific universal lens. The lens is light weight, easy to operate and takes incredibly sharp pictures. If you can afford only one mid-range macro to 55mm lens this is an excellent choice. Macro to mid range this lens excels, money well spent.
