Digital camera reviews of Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens

Digital camera Review: Broken after 17 months
Summary: 1 Stars

We were very satisfied with this lens, as point-and-shoot parents wanting quality pictures of our kids, for about 17 months. Suddenly, without any preceding maltreatment, the auto-focus wouldn't work. In trying to focus manually, I could hear something loose inside the lens and I couldn't move through the entire zoom range. Finally, a piece looking something like a plumber's wrench fell out of the lens. Of course, Canon's warranty is 12 months from purchase. They are asking $95 (plus shipping) to repair it. Might as well buy a new lens. Buyer beware.

Digital camera Review: Canon 18-55mm f3.5-4.6 IS from Camera Video World
Summary: 5 Stars

This little kit lens fit the focal length range I needed most for my 40D. (I bought the 40D with a 28-135 kit lens, but I needed a lens that goes to a bit wider than 28mm.) It's also nice to have a compact lens to use when ou know you won't need telephoto. The price from Camera Video Store was great, and they threw in a haze filter to boot. The shipping was on time.

Digital camera Review: Canon 18-55mm lens with IS
Summary: 5 Stars

This lens was my first with image stabilization. My first picture with it was 1/10 second at F/5.6 hand held at 55mm with a Rebel XT.
The picture was sharp and clear. At least a 3 F stop gain with IS turned on. The performance of this lens has me looking at other more expensive lenses with IS as it appears to be worth the money.

Digital camera Review: Canon EF-@ 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR LENS

Performs as advertised. Basic lens that comes with most of this camera series. My wife really likes it compared to the 50 mm lens.

Digital camera Review: Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS lens
Summary: 4 Stars

Despite hearing mostly positive things about the 18-55mm IS i thought that i would buy it. I already owned a 70-200mm f/4L lens, but was looking for a more versatile wide-angle lens that was relatively cheap that i could take on a cruise and wouldn't worry about dropping. I decided on this lens after a lot of reading. Firstly, a lot of people commented on how fast the lens was at focusing and how sharp it was. I do not know it is it my lens personally, but it neither produced sharp photographs nor focused quickly. The pictures weren't extremely soft, but they were not sharp either. I had to put a lot of photoshop-sharpening into the pictures. But i guess that i got what i paid for. It was one of the cheapest Canon-brand lenses available. Should you buy it? I guess that if you are scraping pennies like i am you should. If you have a lot of money at your disposal or can save up, i'd recommend getting another lens.
