Digital camera reviews of Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR LensDigital camera Review: Decent lens Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this lens to replace the original kit lens of my XTi. Based on reviews, it is supposed to be optically better than its predecessor. I like the IS and the pictures are somewhat sharper than with the previous lens. It was inexpensive and I'll be selling the other lens on Ebay so overall, I'm glad I made the investment. If it was more expensive, I don't think I would have switched.
Digital camera Review: Definately worth the money Summary: 5 Stars
This lens has excellent image quality, sharpness and colors. The build quality is not top notch but for this price who cares?
Digital camera Review: EFS 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS Summary: 4 Stars
I don't know why it took me so long to write a review for this lens. I have it for almost several years. Yeah it is in my closet collecting dusts. Occasionally I do take it out when I go to business trips or some third world countries where I might have a chance to get robbed. I just grab it and throw it into my bag. It 's that easy.
I actually purchased this lens to replace the older non-IS version after reading some rave reviews about it. I have confirmed their findings. This lens is surprisingly good unlike its former incarnation. Besides the barrel distortion and lesser contrast, I could hardly find any flaw for such a cheap lens that everybody seems to trash. Sure, the front glass element rotates and you cannot use a polarizer effectively. It is prone to flares when you angle it toward the sun. But this lens is very sharp; the plastic build is reasonable, and it 's very light weight. Remember how much you are paying for it? This is a good deal considering its optical performance and weight. Plus it has 3-stop IS! Along with its big sister, EFS 55-250mm, you have a whole package that can deliver very decent picture quality without breaking the bank.
Who doesn' t want L lenses? When you 're in tight budget or just a beginner, this is the lens to get. I am wondering why Canon bothers to continue the production of EFS 18-200mm given its substantial performance compromise especially comparing against the Nikon equivalence. If you are a Canon Rebel beginner, don't want to spend too much on lenses, or you want to travel light, get the EFS 18-55mm and 55-250mm package. It 's a good deal.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Addition to the Canon Line Summary: 5 Stars
I have a Rebel XT and sold my 18-55 kit lens to try the new IS version. The gamble was worth it. I sold my old one for $90 and bought the new one for roughly $175 at Amazon. The $85 difference is well worth the price. I don't have the steadiest hands and so the IS has really made a big big difference. I hate fuzzy/blurry pictures and this lens really has reduced the number of bad shots. Color is also impressive, particularly outdoors.
Picture quality is really good for the price. Michi (another reviewer) must have had a bad copy or an extraordinarily good copy of the non-IS version-- this lens, for the money rocks.
I also own the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens (a really fantastic lens). This Canon isn't as good, but for 1/2 the money, it is a bargain and holds its own fairly well.
My advice-- upgrade if you have the old and don't have the cash to upgrade to a higher class lens (like the Tamron I mentioned) and/or buy this lens instead of the non-IS version. If you can't find the Canon body you want bundled with this lens rather than the non-IS, then buy the camera body only and purchase this one seperately.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Value for Money Summary: 5 Stars
I just concluded my US vacation. Before my trip, I decided to buy this lens from Amazon and use it as an all-around lens for the trip. I reckoned that my 24-70L would be too heavy and couldn't fit my 30D my semi-leather case with it. So, I used this lens thoughout my whole trip.
When I reviewed my shots in my laptop, I couldn't find any fault with it. When I compared its pictures with the the shots from my 24-70L, I could barely notice the difference. Its just as tack sharp except in low light conditions where you will notice a slight advantage of the 24-70L.
Color comes out less saturated than the L lens though although very acceptable. Build quality is comparable with other non L lens. IS is superb.
To me, this is the best value for money among lenses that Canon has in its current line up. I will bet good money that this lens will out perform other L and non-L lenses 3x to 5X its price.
A must have for Canonians.
