Digital camera reviews of Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens

Digital camera Review: Fine art artist
Summary: 5 Stars

The lens reminds me of the canon 50mm f1.8 cheap prime, a great lens as long as you have good lighting as proved by my usage of it. Best bang for the buck in zooms I'm sure, for the 18mm end is worth more then what it cost easy.

The colors are not the greatest but very usable with good lighting, a sky filter should warm them up very nicely I'm sure. The IS is good but still not the answer to a faster lens, when it comes to low lighting or inside house lighting.

The glass acts much like the 50mm prime, in the it's pretty good glass but not L glass for sure. The built is pretty good, again not L built but it good and should last a while I'm sure. One needs to remember what the lens is for, being a kit lens it's meant as a good all around lens.

And as a good cheap all around lens it's great and a best buy, it can take some great shots and has a very useful wide angle end. If I had to put a price tag on it with out knowing the cost, I would say a good $300 to $400 lens. So it's worth getting and using as a all around lens, for the times you want a good all around lens.

That you can easy carry around and not have to worry, if it gets broke or some thing you can easy replace it. You can try new things with it and not have to worry, I would class it as a fun lens that can take some great shots. I have canon L lenses and they are the best, but I'm very careful with them because they cost so much, the new canon 18-55mm IS I can play with and have fun with.

And the new kit lens is miles ahead of the old kit lens, sharper and the glass and built is a few steps up. And the IS is a no brainer for sure if you wondering, is it worth the price the answer is a easy yes. Even for pro's and artists, it's one you can take anyplace and very usable, and you can have fun with it when not, on a must have highest IQ shoot.

Digital camera Review: First Impressions of the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens
Summary: 4 Stars

I pre-ordered the lens and only paid as much for it as the non-IS, USM version and I think it was a good buy. The build is light and noticeably plastic ... and while it doesn't feel cheap, it does feel like a $150 lens. The good thing is the lens is very light in weight, the bad thing is the inner zoom ring may not be sealed very well.

I have taken a number of shots over the past two days but the light has been very overcast grey. As such, I have been unable to shoot outside subjects to really gauge contrast. The lens seems sharp and the colors are good (even in the grey light). The IS works differently than the IS in my 70-200. It is interesting to see images that were shot hand-held at speeds slow enough for a moving subject to blur yet have sharp backgrounds courtesy of the IS. I'll post a link to some images when I get a good sampling. I'll also update the review as needed. So far I would give the lens four stars for its value. It's priced right but the f/3.5-5.6 aperture, inexpensive build, and non USM drive are drawbacks.

For a comparison, I would give my EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM five stars for build, image quality, and value. I would also give my EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM five stars because it is simply an awesome lens in spite of the EF-S.

When I think about buying the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM over the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (non-USM) I have to weigh the fact that I would be spending $1k for for a lens that will only work with a few Canon models, but it would be well spent on a lens that would probably always be mounted on the camera.

Digital camera Review: For the money, it needs to be in your bag!
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this lens two days ago, and since I have already I've pulled about 200-400 images through that thing. Though it's not a "wide-angle" lens, it certainly clearly captures down at 17mm and it's pretty darn wide.

I'd have to give this thing two thumbs up. For speed. For weight. For image quality.

Definitely one to keep in the camera bag.

Digital camera Review: Good Lens for entry level amateurs with limited budget
Summary: 4 Stars

I originally got this lens with my XSi I bought a few years ago, I recently purchased the 60d and this is the first lens I bought for it. I am by no means a pro and more importantly dont have the cash for "L" lenses or any lens over $250 unfortunately (maybe someday)

That being said this lens is great for everyday use, I also bought the 55-250 and the 50mm 1.8 (for really cheap!) I am basically into these 3 lenses for $270 which is what the 60d with the 18-135 kit lens would have cost in difference from just purchasing the body. I think I am better off with those 3 than just the 18-135.

With those 3 lenses I should be good to go for anything I want do as an amateur/hobbyist.

This lens is easy for my wife to use who knows nothing about Fstops etc.. she just wants to point and shoot on auto and this gives her a nice range to work with. I also have the 430exII for any lowlight situations.

People who complain about this lens don't understand what it is... entry level. When you review this lens you cant compare it to a $1000 lens.. no doubt it will be better. But not everyone is a pro or has alot of money to lay down and I appreciate Canon putting out lenses like this.

Digital camera Review: Good and quick service
Summary: 5 Stars

I always feel nervous when ordering on line. But time and again the Amazon experience has turned my into a believer.

The lens ordered was exactly what I needed and was in fine shape.
