Digital camera reviews of Canon ES-62 Lens Hood for EF 50mm f/1.8 II (w/ hood adapter 62)Digital camera Review: Eh...it works Summary: 3 Stars
It is a minimalist hood. It isn't a pedal because the lens rotates as it zooms. The attaching mechanism requires pressing two buttons which is a bit annoying, as most other hoods can just be twisted off.
Digital camera Review: Expensive and bad design but does what it's supposed to. Summary: 4 Stars
Expensive if you consider the price of the lens it is for and the price of this hood. However it does what it's supposed to. The design is not one of the best as it is a 2 piece set, the adaptor ring that screws like a filter (you can still use filters before or after the ring) and the hood itself that attaches to the ring with two opposing clips that you must press (instead of a traditional screw on hood).
This becomes more of a pain because the hood has to be perfectly aligned when you press the clips so the hood can fit right, just as other reviewers mentioned. So you either get used to it or go hoodless (which I don't recommend), as there is really no other choice.
Digital camera Review: Expensive but worth it! Summary: 5 Stars
Lens hoods should just come with all lenses as you really shouldn't use them without. Outside I was getting a lot of "haze" in my pictures and this has made them so much better. It is expensive for being a little piece of plastic but worth it!
Digital camera Review: Feels Fragile Summary: 4 Stars
The connecting mechanism feels fragile. But then again, I'd always suggest people to buy original lens hoods for their lenses even though they're a bit pricey for a piece of plastic. I tried a non-Canon hood for my lens but ended up refunding it the next day.
Digital camera Review: I like this hood Summary: 4 Stars
I own this hood and Canon Digital Rebel XT.
I like the hood. It works well limiting stray light as well as protecting the lens.
As you will hear from many experienced photographers (I'm an amateur), they would never shoot pictures without the hood on the lens so why would you?
All hoods are expensive for what they are, a piece of plastic, but they serve a necessary function.
Get the hood if you want the best from your lenses, including this lens the 50mm f1.8 II.
I would give it 5 stars but it is pricey.
