Digital camera reviews of Canon PIXMA iP3000 Photo PrinterDigital camera Review: Don't Pay For This Summary: 2 Stars
I received this unit for free when I purchased my laptop. "Why would anybody give away a perfectly good printer," I thought. After using it I i quickly realized why the store couldn't wait to get rid of them. This unit is no good for the regular, digital picture enthusiast. Why? It utilizes CMYK. This means that all of your photos have to be converted and even then they won't hardly resemble the colors on your monitor. Only design nerds and professionals use CMYK and that's for printing jobs. As well, the lines per inch (lpi) is severely out of whack with my unit. I have to finagle everything I do in Photoshop to a great degree in order to avoid having vertical streaks on my prints.
Even if my unit has some strange quirks that others don't, I highly advise the regular user to stay away due to the CMYK cartridges (which are also more expensive than say HP's). 2 stars out of 5
Digital camera Review: Don't throw them away! Summary: 5 Stars
If the printhead on ANY printer clogs up, do NOT through it out. You can soak the printhead in about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of Windex Window Cleaner overnight, and they are as good as new. Sometimes it might take two nights. A clog can happen if when your very first start using refill inks, or let the printer set too long (Epson). Fixed several printers this way now that people WERE going to trash!
I do not buy anything but Canon now. The Windex trick works on the Canon printhead also.
Digital camera Review: Duplex (2 / double sided) printing a boon! Summary: 5 Stars
After struggling with a jamming HP printer and their unhelpful support, I decided to buy a new one. I wanted to also have duplex. Techadvice.com pointed me to this one (thanks guys!): it works flawless straight out of the box, and has a good printer progress window! 100% value for money!
Digital camera Review: Eats up color ink Summary: 2 Stars
Most of the other reviews praise this printer, and for the most part, the reviews are correct. I like the great, borderless prints and duplex printing. However, I realized something most people just overlook.
I must give it 2 stars, because Canon did something shady: It uses the color ink cartridges whenever you print an image, ANY image, even in "grayscale" mode, and even a B&W photo. Over the course of three months, I have replaced all 3 color cartridges twice, and I have never replaced my black. In fact, the black is still 80% full (you can tell because the ink casing is clear). All 3 colors come out to about $30, while the black is closer to $12, so you can see why Canon designed all images to be printed with the color carts. The black seems to be only for text.
How did I discover this? I was out of the Magenta and Yellow carts, and had about 20% Cyan left, so I decided I would only print in grayscale until there was a sale on the other colors. However, two weeks later, the Cyan was gone! At first I thought the printer was designed to waste ink whenever it does its initialization. I got mad and took out all the color cartridges. I did some prints of websites with only the black cartridge installed, and I noticed the graphics were being printed in weird colors like yellow or pink instead of gray. After a while, there were no graphics printed. I went into photoshop, opened up an image, changed it to grayscale, chose to print in grayscale, and no image was printed. In other words, "grayscale" mode is not grayscale, and the printer is only useful if you keep buying the color cartridges (unless you only want to print text). It looks like the yellow and pink were leftover ink on the printhead.
I'd recommend getting a printer with a dedicated "photo black" cartridge. That way, you only have to replace one color only. Or if you can't pass up a deal on this printer, get this for color prints only, and then get a laser printer (or less shady inkjet if you know one) to do the grayscale prints.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Printer Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this printer to replace a Lexmark Z65. The Lexmark brand is crap it cost twice as much as the Canon and the quality wasn't even half as good. Canon puts Lexmark to shame. I tossed my Lexmark in the dumpster, the acdc adapter had melted anyway and I wasn't about to replace it.
This printer is so much faster quieter and has better text quality, not to mention the beautiful pictures it prints out even with the canon software. I can't wait to try it out with Photoshop. I need to buy more canon glossy photo paper. The cost of the printer after $20 rebate on (...)was $45 dollars. Worth every Penny and then some.
