Digital camera reviews of Canon PIXMA iP6700D Photo Printer (1441B002)Digital camera Review: Good (while it lasted) - great customer service Summary: 2 Stars
My printer lasted approximately six months before succumbing to "error 5100" messages. The error prevented the printer from completing print jobs and Google research suggested "error 5100" is a catchall for a variety of issues. I contacted Canon and a simple diagnostic suggested I had an encoder problem (something to do with the printer's ribbon). Canon's telephone representative told me I was the first person he spoke with who had this problem with this model. Unfortunately, there was no way for me to fix the printer myself, but since Canon has a one-year warrantee, they allowed me to either bring the printer to a store for repairs (Canon would pay the bill) or receive a refurbished printer via UPS. The refurbished option was a lot more convenient and "refurbished" is a broad term...technically, a product returned to Canon because the exterior box is damaged is "refurbished." Just three business days later, the refurbished printer arrived and it works well (and shows absolutely no signs of previous use or damage...I have a feeling it is overstock). Canon even gave me 6 BRAND NEW ink cartridges (a ~$70 value), a new power cable and all the CDs and documentation. Additionally, they gave me a prepaid UPS sticker so all I needed to do was stick my damaged printer in their box and bring it to the UPS store. So although I'm disappointed the printer broke after 6 months of light to moderate use, I'm very impressed with Canon's customer service. As for the printer...the photos I print always look pretty good and match what is on the computer monitor. Just be sure to always check your printer settings before printing...if you're printing on glossy photo paper or matte paper or want better quality/worse quality, you need to enter this information in the print dialog window before confirming the print job.
Digital camera Review: Good Pictures. This one is an ink hog though. Summary: 2 Stars
I had been using a Canon S520 for a few years to print color labels. There are several great features to the S520. One was the ease of repair. There are places on the web that solve many of this printer's maintenance issues. This allowed me to maximize our investment on the printer. I was able to keep it going well past its normal life. Eventually, could take no more.
Enter the iP6700D.
It's very quiet and has great image quality, even at the lower settings. But this one is a serious ink hog. It uses 35% more ink than the S520 on the exact same labels that we have always printed. The worst part is aftermarket (or third party) ink tanks require you to remove a small circuit chip on the front of the OEM ink tank. The process requires a razor knife, double sided tape and a lot of patience. Instead of just popping in an aftermarket tank, you have to perform surgery on the old one first. The process takes about 10 minutes once you have mastered it. But, the Canon printer some how writes to the chip when the OEM ink runs out and tells it that the tanks is depleted. When you transfer the circuit chip to the new tank, the printer informs you that it knows you are swapping the chips for the sake of using aftermarket ink and warns you that you are voiding the warranty. Big brother is in my printer!
Of course, the easy way to get around this issue is to use OEM ink tanks, but they range in price from $14 to $19 each. And again, they still print 35% less pages than the good-old fashion S520 tanks. Aftermarket tanks are only $4 to $5 each. You can imagine that there is a buck or two of profit in the non-OEM tanks so imagine what the profit is on the Canon ink. It's insane!
We all know that printer manufacturers make their money on the ink, not the printer. But sheesh, this kind of robbery is uncalled for. It's a shame that Canon would be so greedy.
If you buy this printer, be preparing for monstrous printing costs or aftermarket ink tank surgery.

Printer is great except I didn't realize it won't print photos
well off my Adobe Photo site.
Digital camera Review: Great Color, Forget about Black and White Summary: 3 Stars
The glossy color photos are outstanding. I usually get a very good match between what I see on the screen and what prints out in color. It's reasonably quick too, even at high quality settings. I'd rate it only average for text, but it is a "photo" printer, which is why I bought it.
My gripe is with the quality of black and white prints. There is a noticeable magenta cast to mid gray tones, even using Canon's Photo Pro glossy paper. (If a B&W print is going to have color pollution, I would not pick magenta.) Darker B&W prints tend to be muddy. Whites are not clean. What I see on the screen is not what I get in the print.
Printing directly from my cameras using Pictbridge or from the sim chip does not help, so this is definitely a printer problem. I have worked hard in Photoshop to counteract this, but can't come up with a neutral palette. I have the same problem with the Canon MP600 multi function printer I use in my home office, so I guess it's endemic to cheaper Canons. Don't buy this printer if you are really into Black and White printing. Now, I upload all my B&Ws to a nearby Walgreens and get great prints in an hour.
Speaking of which. When I first bought this printer I thought I would do all my photo printing on it. After blowing through more than $50.00 worth of ink in no time at all on a printer I paid $115.00 for, and then repeating that process way too soon, I realized that Canon could soon finance a new factory in China on the profits from my ink consumption alone. So now, after Photoshopping, I upload most of my vacation type 4X6s to Walgreens for $.19 ea & pick them up in an hour. I save the Canon for 5X7s or 8X10s which are more cost effective at home.
IMO, if Canon cut their ink cost in half, they'd sell more than twice as much paper and ink, not to mention eliminating a lot of ill will from customers who feel exploited every time they pop for another round of ink cartridges. Right now, their pricing is based on what they think they can get away with.
Digital camera Review: Great Photo Printer Summary: 5 Stars
I did my homework before I bought this printer.. all I can say is.. wow... I have printed out many 8 1/2 X 11" photos on this and am still using the ink that came with it.. I ordered two extra sets of ink and have yet to need them.. I'm printing of HP glossy paper from a cannon 8MP camera.. Everything I have printed out I have put in a frame and hung on the wall.. I would highly recomend this printer to anyone.. Print time is slow.. but worth the wait.. The lcd is not the best.. but if you know what photos you want to print it works great for that.. also has a crop and zoom feature that has come in handy on a few pictures... As this is my first photo printer.. I make a great choice... buy it.. you'll like it..
