Digital camera reviews of Canon Pixma MX310 Office All-in-One Inkjet Printer (2184B002)Digital camera Review: Deprth of Field - Terrible Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this 4 in 1 printer to replace a HP2610 that died due to an inherent defect. This printer is in our store and one of the main uses is to scan jewelry. This is where the MX310 is terrible. Nowhere in the specs for any 4 in 1 is listed the depth of field that it can scan clearly. By depth of field I mean what part of a 3D object is in focus when scanned. I'd say that this printer has way less than a quarter of an inch depth of field. The HP that broke had over a half an inch DOF.
If I bought this printer at a B&M store, I would have taken it back.
So don't by this printer if you plan on scanning anything that has depth.
Digital camera Review: Disappointed in Canon! Summary: 2 Stars
I'd been looking for an inexpensive all-in-one for my home office. Boy, am I disappointed with the Pixma MX310! Everything hinges on the "always empty" ink cartridges.
My main complaints:
1. The ink cartridges are ALWAYS empty! I don't print much. I have the settings at "draft quality". I can get maybe 30-40 pages before it wants more ink. I understand that I'll have to replace the ink occasionally in any printer, but it is frustrating to go through ink faster than I go through milk!
2. This printer will not function unless the ink in both the black and color cartridges is full. Even though it requires no ink to scan a document and save it as a PDF file, it will not budge. Even though it comes with a setting to print from "only black" or "only color" cartridges, both must be full in order for the printer to function. What kind of technology gives you a ton of great options, then leaves you hanging because it wants another $20?
Other than the ink issue, this is a great little machine. The scan quality is good. I've used it to scan old photos into iPhoto without any problems. I love being able to copy at home. The price on this printer is tempting, but ultimately not worth it. I will stay with an all-in-one machine, but I think my Canon days are done.
Digital camera Review: Do not buy this machine Summary: 1 Stars
This printer is NOT user friendly. Definitely not plug & play. The instruction book is hard to understand. And calling customer service is practically useless too. So, you waste a lot of time & effort just getting it up and running.
The fax machine cuts on whenever it wants. My fax machine is on the same line as my house phone. Although there is a setting to take phone calls first, the fax machine cuts on automatically during regular phone calls. No matter if you're receiving a call or calling out yourself. And once it starts, you have to unplug the machine to stop it. Forget about using this feature unsupervised. You still have to coordinate with the sender that a fax will be coming thru, so you can set the machine up to receive it. Even then, sometimes you never know if you have to pick up the phone to receive the fax or whether the machine will pick it up automatically. Because of this I have yet to receive a fax (I've sent plenty. I just can't get them.) It's just not worth the trouble trying to figure it out.
It uses up ink fast. Totally useless for large projects. I was trying to create an obituary for a friend, by the time I was thru I had used up 3 sets of ink cartridges (at approx $20/cartridge), & ended up having to go to Office Depot to get them printed anyway.
The feeder doesn't work well. If you're trying to feed more than 2 or 3 items at a time, it stops working. Especially if the items being fed thru are not 8" X 11". Anything smaller or larger will jam the machine.
The scanner is a pain. Even though it says it will scan stuff that is fed thru the feeder, I've only been able to scan items placed on the platten. You have to tell the machine what it's scanning too. I mean if the document being scanned is a black/white document, black/white picture, color document or color picture. If you don't the quality of the scan is effected. My previous scanners have scanned what's seen. I didn't have to fiddle with the machine prior to making each scan. Small items being scanned come out ok. But because of the feeder problem, if you need to scan something that's larger than 8" X 11", forget about it.
Based on my experience with this product, I will never buy another Cannon printer.
Digital camera Review: Does It All and Does It Well Summary: 5 Stars
This a solid 4-in-one unit with automatic-document feeding. Everything was set up and working in about 15 minutes using the short-cut installation guide.
FAX - I didn't have the problems in fax set up described in other reviews with a non-dedicated fax line. Everything worked between the answering machine and the fax after choosing Telephone Priority in the settings. You can load and send multiple-page faxes automatically using the document feeder or the glass surface, which is very convenient.
PRINTER - Print quality is good to very good for documents and photos. Other reviews have mentioned how much ink the printer uses and I did notice the first few items I printed had a very dark text. But there are three setting for print quality (Standard, High, and Fast) that you can use to control the ink. Fast is noticeably lighter but I still find it good enough for basic text and copies.
COPIER - Copy quality is very good and on Standard mode it was hard to tell some from the originals. Copies aren't on a par with the self-service copiers at Kinko's or Staples, but they are close enough for everyday use.
SCANNER - Put a item on the glass surface, press Scan on the keyboard panel and the software automatically launches on your PC. Very easy with intuitive software for simple scan procedures and there is also the option for advanced editing if needed. Scan results were fine.
I was looking for a basic all-in-one machine for home use with good to very good results in all functions. This does the job and it would be hard to expect much more at this price.
Digital camera Review: Doesn't print. Summary: 1 Stars
This printer is a nightmare. It constantly says it is out of ink when it is not. It says "load paper" when the paper tray is full. It jams all the time. In short, it is a huge paper weight that always has a malfunction that prevents it from performing the very simple task of printing. It often takes 30 minutes to print a document that is 5 pages or so because of the constant jams, "please load paper"s and other various problems it has. I have had increasingly frequent problems with this thing, and am now giving up entirely and buying something else. Complete waste of money- choose a different printer!!!
