Digital camera Review: Amazing feature set and good quality results
Summary: 4 Stars

Bought this on Newegg on special for $160 with free shipping. Ordered on Sunday night and had it on Tuesday. I usually love Amazon but in this case Newegg was much better. (No tax either, and I'm in New York so I'd have to pay tax through Amazon.) In sum, you really can't find a better combination of features and quality for the price. The only real complaint I have is that sometimes documents fed through the automatic document feeder aren't 100 percent straight (more like 98 percent straight, but this is only a problem sometimes).

PROS: Auto-duplexing for input and output; 35-page document feeder; great quality when using high print settings; good speed at all settings (unless it's 2-sided); two paper inputs allows you to keep two different papers in the printer at all times, or to just close the top feed if you want; fast and high quality faxing with lots of features (fax isn't just an afterthought in this machine); multiple ink tanks means no disposing of partially full ink cartridges; very good driver software gives you lots of printing options through your computer; many copy, fax and scan options built into the machine and accessible through nice rotating LCD screen; no paper jams yet (UPDATED: Still no jams after over three months of continuous use!).

CONS: It's BIG, as in seriously big and heavy too; like I said above, about one-third of the time documents fed through the document feeder are just the slightest bit off; duplex printing is slow because it stops for ten seconds to let the ink dry on one side before printing the other side; text printed at low quality can be fuzzy, definitely use high print quality for important documents; it's a little on the noisy side and even has a "quiet mode" that I haven't tried yet; after two weeks of use I had to run the "unclog nozzle" routine to make some black streaking go away (I realize that maintenance is needed sometimes but after just two weeks seems a bit soon); would be nice if it came with a USB cable; photo printing gobbles up ink.

Overall so far I'm quite satisfied, though if the document feeder issue gets worse before the one year warranty expires I'll send it to Canon for service. And if need be I can always place documents on the glass by hand. Without that issue I'd give it 5 stars.

(Note, after 13 months of use this printer fell off a table and stopped working. So be careful and don't drop your printer.)

Digital camera Review: An incredible printer
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this all-in-one printer in August 08 and has been very please with its performance. The set up was extremely easy. I connect the printer through a print server with my home wireless network. It connects easily with the 3 Mac and my laptop PC without a problem. Just follow the instructions on the quick setup and you are done. The printer is fast, does not take long to warm up. The feature that I love is the ability to scan documents and send them to any computer connected to the network. The scanned photos come out gorgeous, fast. Very pleased with this printer, will recommend it 100%.

Digital camera Review: An upgraded/cost restrained MP830
Summary: 5 Stars

The Canon MX850 is really an updated Canon MP830 multifunction printer. Minor improvements in software, faxing, networking from the MP830, which I owned previously. It seems to do a slightly better job lining up paper and functioning when doing two sided paper printing. It prints excellent photos. The scanning quality, and I can't seem to put my finger on this, seems to have dropped slightly from the excellent quality of the MP830 .It is a slightly noisier but still acceptable functioning machine but I suspect they went through a cost cutting redesign of the printer mechanism. Only time will tell if it has the durability of the MP830. The printer ink costs are about average/slightly below average and we all hate paying for those costs. Overall I am pleased with this machine and would rate it in the upper 25% of the machine I have used.

Digital camera Review: Another great product from Canon !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This printer is an upgrade to my Canon Pixma iP6000. The iP6000 is excellent for printing photos as well as all daily stuff. I was concerned that a multi-function printer would not print photo's as well. I was wrong!!!

This multi-function printer is as good, maybe even a little better at photos than the iP6000 was. I have only had it a couple of days, so I have not tried everything out yet. Regular print quality is excellent. Copying is great. Scanning should come out just as good as copying, but I've yet to try it. Photo printing is excellent.

If your looking at this just remember to consider its size. I don't think it's really any bigger than most other all-in-ones but it is bigger than my last printer.

I went with the MX850 for 2 reasons. (1) Networking capability and (2) Canon technology. I am very pleased with my decision!!
The set-up went without any problems at all. The first computer I hooked it up to is a desktop running XP home via USB. Installed perfectly.
Next was a laptop running Vista via network. NOTE: As instructed by the instructions you must attach the USB cable to the FIRST computer that is being installed on the network before you connect it via the network. After it is completely installed you no longer need that USB connection. It will connect via the network. Yes, my laptop is connected wirelessly. It works great!!! For any additional computers on the network all you have to do is install the software and connect it via the network. NO USB required for all additional network computers. The installation software is very easy to understand. There are only 3 install options. (1) Install to computer via dedicated USB connection. (2) Install FIRST computer on a network (must use USB this ONE time only). (3) Install additional computers on network. Thats it...

As I said it's only been a couple of days so I have yet to try everything out, but so far NO disappointments. It seems to be a very well built simple to use machine. Software seems to be running fine on XP and Vista. Not sure where the pricing will go on this unit but, Amazon dropped their price $45 only a couple days after I ordered it. I was happy at full retail, but at $235 you can't go wrong !!!

The one thing I do recommend is to use Canon photo paper when printing photos. I found that I got the best results this way. That was on the iP6000, but I'm sure the MX850 will be the same way.

Good luck with your purchase. Hope this helps a little.

EDIT:
It has been a few more days since original install.

During set-up on another computer on the network it would not install. I called tech support for help. The problem was my computer NOT the printer. Tech support was great!!!!!! They walked me through step by step checking everything till we found the problem. Canon has their support in the US and they have a dedicated department for networking. It was actually a pleasure calling them for help. Usually I hate to call for support. You never know where the call is being routed. Very nice to know you can get quick easy help if needed.
Also since I got a chance to play a little more with the printer I discovered how quick it is. I was happy with the iP6000 print speed, but the MX850 makes me realize how slow it was. I didn't time it, but it printed a 4x6 photo very quickly!! Another nice feature is the door where the paper comes out will open automatically when you print.

So far no regrets!!! Don't be afraid to call tech support if needed. They are great!

Digital camera Review: Another superb Canon product!
Summary: 5 Stars

5 Stars! I've used this printer for a couple of weeks and have found that the photo printing quality alone is enough to make me happy that I bought it. It makes beautiful borderless 4x6 inch prints with vibrant colors and very nice detail. They look to me like they came from a photo lab. I like the automatic document feeder, too. I had a few problems using it, but it could just be my inexperience with the printer that caused them. The paper jammed a few times. Also, the scanner software on my PC died several times, saying that it didn't have enough memory. I got past that after I quit some applications and scanned without asking for any post-processing. (I have 2 GB of memory on the PC.) Otherwise, the ADF is a very convenient option to have. I wouldn't even consider scanning more than a few pages at a time without one. The pages scan fairly quickly, too. An even more cool feature, though, is 2-sided printing. It prints both sides of a document without asking me to turn the pages over. I like that! After printing one side of a page it pulls it back from the output area and prints the other side. Very cool. I've never had this feature on any printer that I could afford. It makes it so much easier to print multiple 2-sided documents, because I don't need to stay by the printer to keep turning over piles of papers. Output quality is also excellent, better than any printer that I've owned in the past. Nice work, Canon.
