After spending a career in print and video production, I was very reluctant to leap into an all-in-one machine when the price was less than I paid for my first digital camera (and not a very good one at that). I worried over the Epson (my choice for years for photo printing), HP and the Canon. By the time I was on a first name basis with the staff at several local shops (spent hours printing and comparing) and after hours on the Web reading all there was to read, I was still confused.
I finally selected the Canon MX850 because the physical unit seemed to be better built than the other two lines. Also the photo/copy products were great. Not sure the photos are quite to the level of the multi-ink high end photo-only printers from Epson but who gets out a magnifying glass to compare. If there is a difference, it would require that level of examination.
The MX850 is 100%+ user friendly and is a remarkable machine for the money. Do your own comparisons and then decide. But make sure you give the MX850 serious consideration. I labored over my decision for more than 6 months. And I made the right one.

It is good' clear copies and scans. I have not tried pic scan yet. It is one of the top line in Canon. It has 3 cons though; it is a little noisy when you make copies, big in size and the manual seems complicated but I could wrong. The price decended drastically from $220 to $160. I installed the printer on my XP system. It worked flawlessly. I then up graded my system to Vista and re-installed the software. Again, it works flawlessly. Check out the specs for the printer at the Canon web site. They are all accurate. Photo quality is outstanding. Installation is a snap. First be sure to remove ALL the packing and protective foam and tape (there is a lot that is somewhat hidden). With the USB cable unplugged, install the software. Then connect the USB cable. The software will take you through this process step-by-step. Once this is complete, setup your fax info. I am connected directly from the printer to the PC, but you can also network the printer. Great printer that copies,prints, faxes, and scans with excellent quality. Ability to sacn directly to word format is especially useful. The dependency of this printer is welcome after multiple problems with equilavent HP printers. Unfortunately the printer I received from Amazon had a defective computer chip and would not work but Amazon returned it without hassle. I purchased the same model at a local office supply and am very happy with it.
