Digital camera reviews of Canon PowerShot A470 7.1MP Digital Camera with 3.4x Optical Zoom (Gray)Digital camera Review: 1 trip, 2 Canon Camera Failures Summary: 1 Stars
On the 2nd day of my 5 month long trip to Mexico my Canon Xti failed to function. I needed a camera! I am in a small town, a 9 hour bus ride from a city. The best camera I could find was a Canon Powershot A470. I bought it. Four days later I got the "lens error restart camera" message and got it repeatedly. So, I'll be without camera for the next four weeks. When I do get to the city the new camera I will be buying will not be a Canon. I begin to sympathize with the guy who gives negative reviews to all new Canon cameras, maybe he is performing a public service.Canon PowerShot A470 7.1MP Digital Camera with 3.4x Optical Zoom (Gray)]]Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Black Body Only)
Digital camera Review: A good entry-level camera Summary: 5 Stars
These PowerShot "A" cameras are Canon's attempt to deliver the quality and features of its more expensive PowerShot "G" and PowerShot Pro "S" lines (such as full zoom lenses) at a budget price. The results are pretty good. (How do I know? Because I've actually gotten to use all of these cameras. I earn my living at Walt Disney World writing a travel guide, and nearly every day guests ask me to take photos of them with their own cameras, which most often are Canon PowerShots.)
Here's my opinion of the top-selling "A" series cameras:
7TH PLACE: Featuring Canon's acclaimed Digic III processor, the 2007-model A560 includes the company's face-detection metering system and a decent red-eye removal. It's a nice camera, but a better value is the new A470 (see below). $150 list.
6TH PLACE: The A570IS is the same camera as the A560 but with optical image stabilization and the ability to shoot manually. $200 list.
5TH PLACE: You can do a lot with the sweet little A630. It's a 2006 model, but has a flip-out LCD panel and lots of manual controls. The shots I've seen from this model look great. Keep your ISO under 800 and you won't get any noise. $350 list. (Canon offers a 2007 version of this camera that I haven't had much experience with yet, the A650 IS. It also lists for $350.)
4TH PLACE: The 2008-model A580 is an A590IS (see 1st Place, below) without image stabilization and with semi-automatic instead of manual controls. $150 list.
3RD PLACE: The fully-loaded A720 IS has all the toys, including a 6x zoom (35mm film equivalent of 35-210mm), image stabilization, adjustable flash power and optional second-curtain flash. This last feature means you can make the flash fire at the end of a long exposure, instead of the beginning, so moving subjects streak into focus instead of out. A 2007 model. $200 list.
2ND PLACE: The 2008 entry-level A470 (the camera on this page) is great for kids or anyone just looking for a good basic camera. But frankly, it's better than basic. It includes Canon's face detection technology and has a zoom lens, 14 shooting modes and the ability to set exposure compensation, ISO and white balance manually. Plus it looks great with the color inserts. Everyone with this little camera always seems to be having fun. $130 list.
1ST PLACE: The A590IS is the A580 (see 4th Place, above) with image stabilization and with the option of full manual controls. For an extra $30 those features are well worth it. I bought this model for myself. $180 list.
Digital camera Review: A great camera for what you pay for !!!! A+ Summary: 5 Stars
At that price of less than 150 bucks including taxes you won't find a better camera with all the features than this Canon !!!! and almost forget, it's a Canon !!!! that say a lot to me !!!
Digital camera Review: A great camera, there's only one shortcoming that I can think of. Summary: 4 Stars
Quick review:
Pros:
- Great price.
- Easy to use.
- Feels like a real camera in your hand.
- Takes great pictures right out of the box.
Cons:
- It doesn't automatically get turned off when it's idle for too long.
- It takes grainy pictures when the light is poor.
- When you zoom in at some of your pictures in full resolution, you will find that some of them are grainy.
Full review:
I purchased this camera right before leaving for a long trip abroad. I expected it to be a wonderful camera for taking all those pictures of my vacation. It never did disappoint me and it produced wonderful results, some of which do indeed look very artistic. I have a friend who's a professional photographer, and he did praise some of the pictures that I took. It really never failed me.
The first major thing that other reviewers mention is the design of this beauty. It's very well-designed and isn't ugly at all. It sure isn't as slim as some other cameras, but I think that the size is just right, the buttons aren't hard to press and it has that intuitive Canon interface that allowed me to take my first pictures of my vacation right after I left the airport.
I bought Energizer Rechargeable Batteries for use with them, and they generally lasted for about 4-5 days of average tourist usage - this means taking a picture every 5-10 meters. I don't use flash as I only took pictures in daylight, when sightseeing and public transportation networks were functional. The battery life is great.
I only had one issue with the battery life. I always had the camera in my backpack, and it did get turned on somehow and remained on till the batteries were empty a couple of times. This actually prevented me taking any pictures of one of the most beautiful towns that I have been to, which is a real pity. It was on a weekend and I couldn't find any place where I can find some batteries. I think that Canon should add a functionality that will prevent the camera from staying on for too long.
Another issue that I had with this Camera was the fact that it takes grainy pictures when the light is poor. This means that most pictures taken in the dark will be somewhat grainy. I don't think that it's a real issue as taking pictures of ghosts isn't one of my hobbies, but it still is something to consider.
Another thing to consider is the level of the details. When you download your full-resolution pictures to your computer, open them in an image viewer, and zoom in to 200-400% you will notice that the pictures can be grainy. This isn't that great when you're editing those pictures in Photoshop, but this isn't a real issue if you're not a professional photographer or a hobbyist. You can not the pictures from this camera to be as crisp as those coming from a Nikon D3 after all.
All my customer images on Amazon were taken using this camera, you can see how great this camera really is.
I took thousands of pictures with this camera and it's still going strong. I think that it will really serve me well for my needs for years to come. I am not a photographer, and all that I am interested in is taking pictures of the places that I go to, family, and friends. This camera does that, does it well, and comes at a great price. It's unbeatable in this price range. It's a great camera for a student like me.
It really helped me document my vacation and gave me more than two thousands pictures of pure beauty. I am really grateful for that.
Digital camera Review: A no brainer! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not good with anything electronic and I can even use this camera. The definition is incredible and the pictures are great!!! This is probably one of the best purchases I've ever made. Fits my budget and is high quality!! Thank you Amazon!
