Digital camera reviews of Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-Inch LCD

Digital camera Review: A Little Disappointed by This Little but Nifty Point-and-Shoot
Summary: 4 Stars

I'd first like to say that I'm a long time Canon user who has owned various Canon cameras dating back to the film days so it was a difficult to write this mixed review of the PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera. The cameras I've owned since childhood range from film SLRs to digital SLRs to point-and-shoots; actually I still have a Canon PowerShot SD630 with a whopping 6.0 megapixels LOL that will spank the D10 any day of the week. Review will also be a summary since there are plenty of very good reviews out there.

Pros:
- Waterproof
- Quality build
- Nice design with multiple latching points
- Large LCD
- Lightweight
- Feature-rich

Cons:
- Slooowwwww!! Suffers greatly from shutter lag
- White balance inadequate: Yellow tint for most indoor shots
- A little bulky, definitely will not fit in your back pocket
- Another slooowww! Frame rate per second leaves a lot to be desired.

Others:
I would give this camera a 3.5 stars but Amazon does not allow 1/2 stars. Overall it's decent for a point-and-shoot except for the terrible shutter lag and the dismal auto white balance. Still very useful if you're on the beach for summer vacation and don't want to lug around your usual 50D + 24-70mm f/2.8L + with battery grip. It wouldn't do well below the waves anyway.

Digital camera Review: A camera you don't have to be afraid to have FUN with.
Summary: 5 Stars

After owning this camera for a fun summer week, here is my reaction:

Yay! I can take the camera to the beach! (and drop it in the sand)
Yay! I can take the camera to the pool! (and drop it in the water)
Yay! I can let my kids use the camera! (and drop it on the ground)

In all seriousness, this is a great camera that takes fantastic pictures that are at least as good as those taken with my sd1100. What Canon has done is not waterproof a dumbed-down camera and force you to own two point-and-shoots (one waterproof, one that takes good pictures)

...instead, they have combined them into one glorious camera.

Highly recommended.

One last thing:
Shooting video from in the pool as someone dives in and then submerging underwater to continue filming them in a sea of bubbles is so_much_fun.

Digital camera Review: A good camera for the money
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this camera for a year. Bought it last year before going in vacation in Costa Rica, to ensure that I can get some pictures in the water or anywhere where and when I couldn't use my Canon Digital SLR. I have waited to review it until I used it enough times and in different conditions. It has held well on dry land and in water. The quality of the pictures is very good and it is very easy to use. I have taken pictures in the ocean, I went white water rafting with it, stayed in torrential rain and taken pictures, even zip-lined with it! While rafting some really white waters I had the camera in a tiny camera bag secured across my body. I fell in the water and I had no worries that my camera will die before I get back on my tube. I dropped it a few times and it's fine. The screen is actually the most exposed to shock and I have been trying to be careful about that. The lens are recessed so they are somehow protected. I have other Canon cameras and that is one reason I went with this camera. It had most of the features I wanted, plus a movie mode. The movies are decent quality, even in a dark, with smoke-effects party hall, and good sound. I even recorded small videos at a concert hall in NYC, and I was amazed at the clarity of the sound.
I take it everywhere I think I might have a chance to get some shots and don't want to lug around the backpack with the big 'guns'. It fits in a pocket or a woman's purse (not tote) with no problem.
PROs: stylish, easy to use and carry around, very user-friendly, amazing picture and good video quality, even in water. It also rotates the image on the screen, like the Ipod.
CONs: screen protection is recommended, sometimes when I put it in the water and then took it out the lens 'sweated' for a few minutes, when trying to take pictures in bright sun, with the sun reflecting in the screen, the image completely blacks.
It is by far not as fast as a DSLR, even with a fast card in. It takes a few seconds longer until it 'charges' again for the next shot, even when not using the flash. At night, it's better used with a tripod or have very steady hands. The image will come out shaken. During the day light this doesn't seem to be a problem, but the IS doesn't seem to be working very well with the night settings.
I like this camera and I recommend it. It serves the purpose it was made for at a decent price.

Digital camera Review: A great waterproof camera (with proper expectations) and some useful tips
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great camera and I've had no complaints at all. My reason for posting this review it to suggest some expectations based on this being a special purpose camera. Something it isn't designed to do as well as a regular point and shoot because of design considerations for a camera that must work under water and in other tough environments. Then again, lets see how the pictures you take with a Canon PowerShot SD1400IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Silver) from 10' under water (no sense pushing anything to a limit) turn out. If you are looking for the smallest camera that produces the best images look elsewhere, for example the Canon PowerShot S95 10 MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch inch LCD.

However, if you want something that will capture really good images in places not possible with non-waterproof cameras then this is a really great choice.

Two bits of advice from someone who has owned a number of waterproof cameras...

First, right after you get this, and certainly before you go on vacation, fill the sink with water, hold the camera under the water, take some pictures, and make sure they come out. Also, as you're putting the camera in the sink, look for tiny bubbles coming from anywhere in the camera. It might be air that was trapped from some body contour or air that's escaping from the battery compartment or one of the camera points that was supposed to be sealed. If you see any, take it out, check it out, dry it off, and try again until you are sure that the camera is either working properly (probably the case) or is defective and needs to be replaced.

Second, consider using a very, very tiny bit of silicon grease like some Olympus Silicone Grease for O-Rings on Underwater Housings. on the battery/memory every once in a while. And, whatever you do, inspect the gaskets for grains of sand and hairs before you close them. One of either could form a channel for water to get in.

Lastly, your camera flooding is not necessarily the end of the world. I had my Sanyo Xacti VPC-E2 Digital Camcorder and 8 MP Digital Camera (Blue) flood some years back. (My fault, I changed the battery poolside and didn't close the battery compartment properly before jumping back in.) It stopped working and continued to not work for several weeks. The cost for repair was more than the camera so I just set it aside. Six months later, on a whim, I tried it again and it worked. (I was lucky the problem occurred in a fresh water pool rather than a salt water ocean.) It survived another couple pool/beach vacations before being replaced by this, far superior, camera.

Digital camera Review: A real "Bring it everywhere" camera
Summary: 5 Stars

With this camera, I am not afraid of getting wet, or being mishandled by my son. I bring it everywhere I go to capture some pictures that I had never done before:

Water slides, Swimming pool, Snorkelling, Water theme parks....

GREAT
