I think it is an excellent choice if you want a compact camera with many functions and an excellent optical zoom. it takes great pictures in different ways you handle.

Small enough to fit in a pocket and powerful enough to get close-ups without all the attachments one has to carry with bigger cameras. As a teacher and Mother it fits all my needs in a camera

Digital camera Review: Canon SX200 IS
Summary: 4 Stars

I have only had the camera for a few weeks and haven't had much time to play around with it, but it's quite simple to just pick up and start taking pictures. So far I have been very impressed with both the still picture and video options.
The one drawback that I have noticed is that when I am taking pictures, if I am holding the camera with one hand instead of both hands, I frequently hit the "play" button which displays the pictures already taken. There have been many times when I am about to take a great photo of our kids and then it switches to the play setting and I lose the opportunity to take it. The button is just in a bad place on the camera. That is the only drawback I have found so far. Other than that, I am very satisfied with the camera.

I still am in the testing stages of this camera. I FINALLY GOT IT!!! Let me recommend to any interested buyers to go the EXTRA FEW DOLLARS to purchase this from a TRUSTED website. I had ordered this from about 2-3 other websites for $20.00-$30.00 cheaper and they ALL ended up being "bait-and-hook" schemes!! So far I REALLY love this camera. I have previously had a Fuji S1000 which had some very similar capabilities to the Canon SX200, but WHOA!! I like the Canon SOOOO much better - especially how compact it is for SOOOOOO many extra and awesome features. I have to keep testing the super macro setting so that I can perfect that, because the Fuji seems to be able to do a better job there - but I've only have it for a week so I've got more to experiment. With the 12.1 MP, the shots have been incredibly clear. And with the 12X zoom - I can see things I didn't think I would be able to see!! Haha! Lets hope this camera continues to impress me!!

A recent vacation allowed me to exercise the SX200IS's abilities. I had already decided that the Auto mode did just fine in any of the things I had tried, so all pics, indoors or outside, were shot in auto. I ran the lens from full wide to full optical plus digital zoom, taking pictures of Mt. Rainier, St Helens, the Columbia Gorge and Japanese gardens. In most cases the camera was handheld, with no rest. Despite the not-so-hot images I saw on the LCD, the finished product on the computer turned out beautifully. The naked eye (mine at least) could find no sign of degraded resolution, even on the longest zoom, even in 8x10 prints. I had previously noticed that the "sharpen" tool in Picasa did not seem to alter the images at all, in contrast to the older digital camera I had used, where all images were greatly enhanced by Picasa. I have had no problems with the camera in the year I have been using it (a lot). I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to have high quality images with an easy to use point-and-shoot.
