Digital camera reviews of Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash for Canon Digital SLR CamerasDigital camera Review: Best thing to happen to me Summary: 5 Stars
The only bad thing I can say about this flash is that it doesn't work well without fully charged batteries (preferebaly NiMH 2300 mAh). If you use old batteries it will take literally minutes for the flash to cycle.
This is the best flash for the money. I use my camera mostly for taking photos indoors, and as most of you will know that the built in flash on cameras produces harsh shadows and red eye. Using this Speedlite (I use it on a Canon T2i) you can direct the light straight up or bounce it off a wall which allows for beautifully lighted subjects (ie my kids and pets ).
If you are on the fence about this because of the price, as I was, just trust that once you put it on your camera and take that first shot you will instantly forget about the how much you spent on it.
Digital camera Review: Blew Away my Expectations Summary: 5 Stars
When I started to research flash photography, I choked on the price. However, after my initial fears were reduced by the ratings and other research, I decided to go ahead and purchase it. This is the only way I can describe it: You know the moment when you switch from point to shoot to DSLR, and are amazed by the picture? It's VERY much like that.
Once you look at basic guides to bouncing the flash and so on, the picture can easily look 10x better. Colors on nearby walls become more vibrant, and the main subject tends pops out much more.
ETTL mode is also very accurate. I am normally skeptic of anything that is automatic, but 99% of the time, it creates a perfectly exposed picture. On the subject of automatic, the focusing system built into the flash does wonders. No more does the flash have to fire rapidly to focus in low light. It also is able to focus on an object with very little contrast or features, which is a huge plus in certain situations.
Overall, I have absolutely no regrets over purchasing the 430EX ii. It brings your photography to a whole new level, even if you are an amateur. If you are on the fence like I was, just go for it- I can guarantee you will be astonished.
Digital camera Review: Brilliant little flash unit Summary: 5 Stars
The TTL metering on the flash is almost perfect, smoothly illuminating subjects in difficult conditions including indoors with competing lighting. With new batteries it refreshes quickly and is easy to adjust for exposure.
Digital camera Review: Built in flashes are limited Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this to go with my Canon S5is and have found it to be more flash than I really need but nice to know that it is future proof if I step up to a dSLR.
It interfaces very well with the S5is considering it is not a dSLR. Did a little experimenting since it is so much more powerful than the built in flash. The flash angle and rotation adjustments allow for good images in every situation I have come across so far.
Have been running Lithium AA batteries and they last better than I expected. Cannot remember exactly how many images on one set but it must be okay because I would have remembered if it was poor.
Have added a filter by using the Canon lens adapter/hood set, but unfortunately the built in flash causes a shadow on the images. The external external flash solves this problem, and makes the images so much better lit.
Overall, very happy and would recommend this flash.
Digital camera Review: Buy a yourself a speedlight! Summary: 5 Stars
OK, if you are reading this review, you are getting serious about digital photography. So, you ABSOLUTELY MUST buy yourself a speedlight. You will see DRAMATICALLY better flash photos.
I can't say how this one compares to other speedlights because this is the first one I've ever used. But, I am VERY happy with the 480EX. I got it for Christmas, popped it on the hot shoe of my Canon Rebel XT, and BOOM--I started taking photos of the family on Christmas morning. Great shots! I know I look a little like Uncle Earl with the dorky flash on his camera, but I don't care. The depth of the photos makes it worth it.
