Digital camera Review: Eats Tapes, Doesn't Record

I've had this MiniDV Camcorder for about a year and so far, it has had to be sent back to Canon to be repaired 3 times. Each time, they say they had fixed it and listed the parts that they supposedly replaced, but after a few minutes, the problem returned. My ZR10 also eats tapes now, after only shooting two hour-long tapes. It is out of warranty as I found I'm not really a video sort of guy and didn't use it all that much. But it's clean as a whistle and hardly used, and now I can't play back the tapes I did make so I have an $800 paperweight.I just spoke to Canon and they still refuse to take responsibility even though a lot of others, as you can see, had the same problem. It's not worth $200 to fix it since I'll probably never use it but I don't know how I'll watch those tapes.
My recommendation: don't buy it.

This is my first digital camcorder and I am very impressed. It is easy to use, shoots excellent video and has great battery life. We visited Thailand late last year and the camcorder behaved flawlessly. It coped very well with lighting extremes, switching from bright, midday sun to deep shadow without missing a beat. Add the excellent steady shot feature and I was able to capture footage of the Jade Buddha from 200 feet away, shooting from bright sunlight, through a door into deep shadow. The best single feature is how small and light it is. We travel often and we like to use the cancorder to capture our journey and get candid shots of our surroundings. With larger camcorders, this is impossible, With this one, most people did not even notice I was shooting. We got some excellent street scene footage in Bangkok and almost nobody noticed I was shooting. It may not match the picture quality of a high end 3CCD camcorder but a highend camcorder would not fit confortably in the palm of my hand and the battery would not last through two hours of taping.Digital camera Review: 3 Stars
I have owned the zr10 for 3 years. Initially, I was thrilled to death over it's small form factor, quality of picture (in good light) and fantastic cd quality sound.Now, it just eats tapes, so I can no longer enjoy it's small form factor, quality of picture (in good light) and fantastic cd quality sound.
Nope, it just eats tapes. It seems to enjoy eating maxell as well as TDK, but will eat just about anything you serve it. I have placed my camcorder on a diet of blank tapes. It is not to be trusted with the task of preserving the memories of my children. It is now, basically, a $600 mistake.
My advice to you? Buy from a company that will stand by it's product line.
