Digital camera Review: A Scanner Darkly - learn from my pain(USB connection on XP)

I finally got the scanner to work via USB to an XP box. Took over 4 hours before I got it working. Forget what some of these reviews say. You do NOT need additional scanning software or look for hidden tools on the install disk. In fact, throw the install disk in the trash as the drivers and toolbox software are out of date.
Download the latest XP drivers from the Canon website(google "canon mf4370dn drivers" and it should be your first hit). Here's what you want(as of 11/16/09):

ToolBox_4911mf09_Win_EN.exe(under Software tab)
MF4370dn_FirmwareUpdateTool_V072.exe(under firmware tab)
Save these .exe files in a temp directory. They are self-extracting archives and will create their own subdirectories when you run them.
Install the drivers(cd to the subdir and run Setup), then the toolbox(same). Shutdown your PC. Connect printer via USB cable(uses the type with the large square end, not the small connector like a digital camera uses). Power up your PC. It will take several minutes for XP to get everything installed so be patient. Eventually, you can click Start->Printers&Faxes (then Scanners and Cameras under Other Places tab)to see that printer and scanner are configured and ready. Test the printing function. If that works, time to do the firmware update.
There is a PDF file in the firmware directory that tells you how to do the update. You will need to use the menu on the printer to put it into firmware update mode. When complete, power off/on the printer. Run the MF Toolbox software. Here's where you link the printer's "Start" button with a function(save to a file, create PDF, etc...). You're on your own after this. Remember to click the "SCAN" button on the machine twice to enter USB scanning mode before attempting to scan.
Follow my instructions and save yourself a lot of time and headaches. Can't speak for network setup as I'm not using it but I strongly recommend using latest software from Canon. In fact, the Canon site says you need the latest firmware to get scanning to work.
