Digital camera Review: Ceiva: A unique idea, but not ready for prime time
Summary: 1 Stars

I received my Ceiva digital photo receiver as a Christmas gift and it is not yet functional. It is a unique idea and a perfect gift for relatives and close friends to exchange photos of love ones. I have not been able to register my Ceiva because the Web site says that my serial number is not valid. I can not get into the Ceiva Tech Support as the phone is always busy and they have not answered my E-Mail message. This tells me that they are very busy solving problems. The only concern I have with the device itself is the picture quality. You must view the photos straight on as the contrast drops dramatically as you view from the sides. The quality is no where near that of a lap top computer. If it was it would be great.

Digital camera Review: Cevia II on the way
Summary: 4 Stars

The Cevia people tell me that they are in the product testing phases for the Cevia II. It's not expected to be on the market until spring 2003 at the earliest. They are looking at adding memory card capability to it, so you can add photos directly to the frame without using the internet, but stated that a subscription will still be required. The subscription's a little spendy for what you are getting. Amazon[.com] won't let prices be shown, so let's just say the monthly fee is equivalent to an individual movie theater ticket.

I did purchase the frame last weekend, which initially only allows 10 photos. It takes 3-4 times of the nightly automatic dial-in before the software will upgrade to allow the 20 photos to display.

Digital camera Review: Check it out before you buy if possible....
Summary: 3 Stars

The idea is very clever and the frame is very easy to use and set up. I object to having to pay a fee to access a web site where I can upload my pictures to. After all, I have just spent a small fortune on this device, why on earth should I have to pay to use it?

That said, I did know it before I purchased it. Anyway, the screen quality is good - if you view it from the right angle. Otherwise it fades. Also, your pictures must be 640x480 pixels, otherwise you get a border around it. If you crop your photos, remember to resize them to avoid this.

I had trouble getting the timer to work. I set it (I thought) to switch off at 11:00 pm and on again at 6:00 am but it remained on all night. So I switch it off manually now.

The only other products right now that come close to this cost a lot more. Sony has a solution that you can plug direcly into your PC, which is nice. And there's also a product called Digi-Frame by a vendor of the same name that has a changeable frame for the picture and offers 2 sizes of frame as well as the direct-to-PC cable.

Overall, it's early days for this technology. I think that the quality of the screen will improve so that you will be able to view from any angle. I think the price will come down - eventually. The biggest drawback for this product is the Internet-connection requirement and the fact that if you want to replace the photographs in your frame, it's a "must have".

Another note - be careful to ensure you have a local access number for Ceiva near you. If you do not, then it's a long-distance call or a call to their 800 number for you Ceiva to get Internet access to download. This costs more!

A good gimmick. A conversation piece. A great gift idea when you're out of ideas.

Digital camera Review: Clever little device!
Summary: 5 Stars

With my parents half way across the country, this clever little device keeps proud grandparents in touch with their grandchildren. We simply just snap pictures and download them into our photo album at ceiva's websight. (www.ceiva.com)

Mom and dad wake up in the morning and there are the grandchildren. What a great way to keep them in touch. BRAVO Just bought another one for the inlaws, and they live in town.

Digital camera Review: Compared to iOpener -- a rip-off.
Summary: 1 Stars

1) This frame uses a regular analog phone connection. Most offices have digital phone lines which renders the frame useless. A $20 Ethernet card would allow those of us who have DSL or fast LAN connection to use this frame without tying up the phone line.

2) $50 a year for using their service -- what, are they crazy? You can get a dialup connection with space for your web site and e-mail for that much. (Or you can get this for free).

3) Picture quality is nothing to write home about.

4) If you want to keep in touch your parents/grandparents , for this much money (or even less) you can get something like iOpener (http://www.netpliance.com)-- which is a complete computer with LCD screen!.
