Digital camera reviews of Celestron SkyMaster Giant 15x70 Binoculars with Tripod Adapter

Digital camera Review: A valued night sky companion
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had my Skymaster 15x70 for about a year and a half now, and I continue to be extremely pleased.

I'm a big fan of binocular stargazing in general. Binoculars are portable, intuitive to use, and easy to set up. Even at low magnification, they allow you to see more than your naked eye can reveal, and some objects are better seen with a wide field of view anyway.

In that regard, I find the Skymaster 15x70 an excellent choice. The 70mm objectives collect enough light to make the Andromeda galaxy and the Orion nebula crystal clear, even among the backyard lights of town. The magnification is just right: strong enough to reveal lunar craters, but not so strong that the natural jitters of holding the binoculars in your hand become distracting. The field of view is about 4.4 degrees, easily enough to contain the entire Pleiades cluster or the full moon. I appreciate the simplicity of the center focus knob, and I find viewing is comfortable either with or without my eyeglasses.

Other reviewers have remarked on the weight, and there's no denying that it's a little exhausting to hold the binoculars for long periods. However, I don't find them much more difficult to hold than my 7x30 birding glasses -- the size of the binoculars is less of a factor than you might expect. The included tripod adapter can help relieve this problem, but the solution is only as good as the quality of your tripod, and most of the time I'd rather sacrifice some stability to avoid the hassle of using a mount.

Like some other reviewers, I did experience collimation problems and had to return the first item I received. The left and right images were very badly out of alignment, and there's no mechanism for correcting it yourself. Your only choice is to exchange it, and Amazon handled the exchange easily and quickly.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase. It's very good quality for the price.

Digital camera Review: AWESOME!
Summary: 5 Stars

ORDERED THESE FOR MY HUSBAND'S B-DAY, BROUGHT THEM TO WORK AND 3 CO-WORKERS ORDERED THEM, TOLD MY SISTER ABOUT THEM AND SHE ORDERED SOME FOR HER HUSBAND. I COULD READ THE SIDE OF AN AIRPLANE, SEE AVALANCHES THAT HAPPENED ON THE HIGHEST PEAK ON THE MOUNTAIN FRONT WHERE I LIVE. I CAN'T WAIT TO USE THEM FOR STARGAZING.

Digital camera Review: AWSOME
Summary: 5 Stars

These are great binoculars, i own Nicon 8X40 and they are great also, but these are awsome.very clear picture, i did not see stars yet, but yes make sure you have tripod, because comparing to 8X40 15X70 is shaky because of magnification, so make sure you have tripod, binoculars look very expensive made, good buy

Digital camera Review: Absolutely worth the money
Summary: 5 Stars

These binoculars are heavy, but not too heavy to hold steadily. The optics are clean and collimated, and provide a good view of many larger deep-sky objects from my backyard. Eye relief is adequate for my daughter to use them while wearing her eyeglasses.

I would not want to take these binoculars backpacking (due to the weight) but they have been ideal at sporting events, on a road trip, and for wide field astronomy.

Digital camera Review: Amateur astronomers, start here. ---->
Summary: 5 Stars

Kudos to Celestron! I didn't think the binoculars would be of such high quality for the price, but they most definitely were worth it. As a budding amateur astronomer, I decided to go the binocular route instead of trying futilely to get my small telescopes to work. Fortunately, I found these for a great price on Amazon and have used these constantly ever since. They're simple and straight-forward, tripod-adaptable, and aren't too heavy for just hand-held observation. And with their incredible field of view, they're perfect for the beginner--you can look easily for a landmark star or constellation and move around to find your target. In city lights, I've been able to see many of the Messier objects in Sagittarius and Leo, a very cratered, very large and very bright full moon, the Galilean moons of Jupiter, and the Orion Nebula with ease. I've even used them to start mini-star parties and have handed them off (albeit reluctantly) to passersby, who were stunned with what they could see. And once Saturn comes out from hiding behind the Sun, its moons will be next on the list. But I digress. Perfect for the beginner. Fantastic, quality job, Celestron! I love 'em, and they'll be in my pack whenever I expect to be under a starry sky.
