Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys CIT400 Dual-Mode Internet Telephony Kit with Integrated Skype

Digital camera Review: A good product
Summary: 4 Stars

A good product does everything it says it would do.
I have had this product for about a month and I no problems to report, it works well.

Digital camera Review: A good skype phone for the house
Summary: 5 Stars

I use it mostly to call family abroad so I set it to only use skype.
It works well and family from abroad can call me anytime for free (with internet access), I like the features, I can be at the next door neighbors and still use the phone. It is worth it. I am looking forward for cell phones with skype, then maybe I wouldn't need skype out.

Digital camera Review: A great idea, but far away from it's ideal functioning...
Summary: 3 Stars

This item is great. I got it along with CIT 310 for Y! Messenger.

Although Skype's got a bit more expensive phone out telephony rates than Yahoo! Messenger, the system is a better idea than Yahoo's CIT 310.

First of all, you don't have to even have a computer for the thingie to work. Just hook it up to your Internet Router, turn it on, and sign in with your username and password to use the service, just like you would on your regular Skype messenger.

Second of all, you can see your skype contacts on the handset screen just the way you see them on your regular skype telephony/messenger system on your computer.

The only drawback is that for some unknown reason the system misconfigures often, having to reset the base and/or the handset. Supposively, the base supports up to four handsets, but I have not seen any handsets sold separately from the base.

Also, when the system misconfigures, it's anything but easy getting it to work again for some god-only-knows reason.

So, it's a good idea, but it often fails, so to speak.

DO NOTE:

1. You need Skypeout to make calls.
2. Although not indispensible, A Skype-in number is a good idea, so you can receive calls, especially since the only requisite is having high speed internet service to make and receive calls.
3. It's got a land line, but then it misses the point having the telephony system, doesn't it?

Hope this helps, amigos... Adios.

Digital camera Review: Additional handsets supported but not available
Summary: 2 Stars

If you are interested in a multi-handset setup. Don't be fooled by the product description or the user manual which states several times that multiple handsets are supported.
They might be supported, but you won't be able to purchase any additional handsets.

Digital camera Review: Almost completely satisfied

For three months prior to purchasing the CIT-400, I used SkypeIn and unlimited SkypeOut to replace a landline mainly used for telecommuting. I used my PC and a headset, and I was very happy with it. After relocating, we decided to go with Skype for our "home phone" rather than getting a landline (for less than the cost of two months of landline service w/ long distance, you can get a SkypeIn number for a year and unlimited SkypeOut).

We got the CIT-400 to eliminate the dependence on the PC. A cordless that connects to the PC rather than directly to the broadband router was another option, but I was concerned that it would be inconvenient to tie up the PC's audio like that (e.g., the kids playing a game on the PC would interfere with phone usage and vice versa).

The CIT-400 has met my expectations. It has great range, and has nearly the same audio quality as my PC with the Logitech 350 USB headset. It is easy to hear the other end of the call on the speakerphone, but you need to be fairly close to the CIT-400's microphone to be heard.

The only nit is, I believe, a Skype issue rather than anything specific to the CIT-400. I expected to be able to use Skype on my PC and the CIT-400 at the same time; however, I had to sign off (go "Offline") on Skype on my PC or the CIT-400 would fail to sign in, drop calls, lose audio, etc. As soon as I signed off on my PC and put the CIT-400 on my router's DMZ (as recommended in a Linksys forum), it has been working fine. It is annoying, since it is much easier to edit contacts on my PC (and the contacts list is shared with the phone) and there are times when I want to call from the PC (e.g., a phone number I looked up on the web). I don't think this is a CIT-400 issue, as I have never tried to use the same Skype account from two PCs behind the same NAT router.

In short, I am quite happy with the CIT-400. For a bit more than the price of a "good" cordless, you get a PC-less Skype solution with a color display, etc. No more "phone bills" for a year now!
