Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys CIT400 Dual-Mode Internet Telephony Kit with Integrated Skype

Digital camera Review: Cheap but solid
Summary: 4 Stars

Nothing bad to say about this phone, except that occasionally Skype craps out and you get errors making calls or having people call you. But for $5/month compared to regular phone service or Vonage, I can't complain. Definitely happy with the hardware, sound is strong and clear, has plenty of features I will never use.

Digital camera Review: Cisco Cust Service non-existant for this crappy product
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this POS and for most purposes it works just Linksys CIT400 Dual-Mode Internet Telephony Kit with Integrated Skypeokay (about a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 when compared to most landline cordless phones). Some of this I could blame on skype but we use an iPhone (apple) for skype too and it works great. The main beef I had was that touch tone does not work once you make a call, so if you reach the hall of messages requesting you enter a tone, you are helpless and must either wait for a voice prompt or hang up. What a drag right? And then you go to the cisco linksys site and it is 5 shades of useless. Finally found there is a firmware file to download. Then what are you supposed to do with it? I have a mac sorry to say and there is NO information on how to upgrade the firmware using a bin file. I am clueless and I know a couple of things about computers. The chat support on the cisco site does not support this product. Anyway, perhaps if you feel like tinkering for a couple of centuries this would be an okay product. But the sound quality and responsiveness are vastly inferior to your run of the mill cel phone. I make my skype calls with headphones talking into my macbooks mic and it works way better. Sorry I bought it.

Digital camera Review: DECEMBER 2008 Time for a more current review to be placed at the top!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased my CIT400 spring of 2007 for $149 - so whats with the current $600 price tag.
I am very happy with the service of this phone over the last 18 months, my wife less so. Of course I take into consideration the $1800 I have saved is reduced phone bills.
The unit does need some support. At times over the last 18 months we've had to periodically unplug the base-station and let the phone reset itself.
The voicemail service was sketchy for a while.

Ok as much as I like this phone and service, $600 is way out of the market when their is so many other Skype phone options available.
The phone does not have a redial button.
You can't push one button to hear recent messages. {It would be nice to be able to mark them as unread, when none are for you.}

Pros:
The speaker phone is nice, so you can share the conversation or set the phone down while you talk.
The hand-set is durable, the wife threw it hard in the first few months.
The Contacts file is huge and you can add them from Outlook, or type them in on your PC {Skype installed on that PC}
Forget the monthly fee quotes. Get the unlimted serice $60/$30 for In & out service. It renewed for $30. You can't beat unlimited phone service for $30 per year. Even the latest thing Magic-Jack is more expensive than that.
Some folks keep the old home phone for local calls and the fear of not being able to make Emergency calls. THAT'S NUTS. JUST CREATE A CONTACT 1 - LOCAL POLICE EMERGENCY AND YOU CAN CONNECT DIRECTLY TO YOUR LOCAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE SERVICE. Toss out the old ATT/Cingular service - You Pay more than $30 per year for just the FCC-TAXES to Uncle Sam.

Digital camera Review: Days are numbered for local phone companies
Summary: 5 Stars

This phone bundled with skype works amazing. It works just like a normal phone without the need of a computer being on. My wife calls europe for about an hour a day. Moving from the local phone company to skype we saved over $300 a month. And now with the new skype plan for 6.78$ a month you can talk all you want with fixed line numbers in 34 countries!
I even use this phone to make local, long distance, 1800 numbers and they all work great. The only reason I am keeping my local number is for calling 911...

Digital camera Review: Decent but can't call certain 800#s
Summary: 3 Stars

I got this so I would not have to buy a 2nd phone line b/c I'm always on conf calls for work at home and my cell coverage is spotty in the house. For some reason every few days I have to power off and power back on the base set b/c my skype service is logged off this phone. I have a robust home network and internet connection but for some reason the phone won't stay logged in. UPDATE Dec 23, 2008. The reasons why the phone would not stay logged in was because I had a faulty female network jack in my house, once I punched down the network jack this problem went away. So this raises my rating from 3 stars to four I also found out that I can't dial some toll free #s via skype w/ this phone. Only once would the phone not log in after powering on and off. I had to log into skype via pc w/ the same account, log off from skype via the pc, then power on and off the phone and then it worked via skype.

But sound quality is good (b/c i get 8 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload) and is useful despite the hassle of powering off and on the phone every few days. I looked for firmware updates for this but i am supposedly on the latest version for this phone.
