Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch

Digital camera Review: ..Never Again!
Summary: 1 Stars

I received the unit and unboxed it,(Version 4.1).Setting it up is easy(it comes with a install disc that is idiot proof, however it wouldn't finished the set up.I called the tech support and after about three hours they decided that it was defective and that i would have to take it back to where i purchased it.Amazon made it right.I have since purchased a westell unit and it works perfectly.

Digital camera Review: 0 stars for PPPoE and 5 Stars for the rest
Summary: 5 Stars

I had chances to install the one port version (BEFSR11) on both 25 user network and my home. Basically, this is an Ethernet to Ethernet router. This is 5 star product on the NON-PPPoE connection. Unfortunately, I want to share my experience here on setting up the PPPoE DSL connection. I am using Bell Simpatico High Speed ADSL connection in Toronto.

First time, I had a test router with firmware 1.2x on it. I tested that for a weekend. It was not workable on PPPoE. After upgrade to version 1.30, I can regain the connection by rebooting the router (unplug and replug). I thought this was OK for home network if that happened once a day. At that time, I did not buy one for home and just want to wait for newer firmware update.

Once I saw the version 1.34 came out. I bought one and restructured my home network with 5 PCs. Everything looks OK at beginning. Sometimes, it was disconnected when two people were surfing the Web. I just rebooted the router. I could bear with that. But, one thing I can not stand is that it froze when I attach a document in hotmail. Think about when you compose an email and attach something, you are kicked off the internet. You have to reboot the router and start all over. It is not guaranteed not being cut the second time. It happened quite often.... Then I started looking for alternative.

Now I am using Netgear RT311 at home. It's been a month. I did not do any upgrade on it. It has a web based interface, too. It looks more like a ROUTER. It never gives me problem. It's a little expensive and hard to get in Toronto.

If your ISP uses DSL with PPPoE and considering this router, please look up their web site and check the firmware upgrade readme file, to see if any major update on PPPoE after version 1.34.

Good luck.

Digital camera Review: 2 Years and running
Summary: 5 Stars

I had this router/switch at my house for over 2 years running without a problem. I was amazed at the performance.

Based on my experience with this product, I would highly recommend a Linksys. My internet access relies on it and it had came through all the time. I also like the firewall feature.

For the price and quality, it is a 5 stars no doubt.

Digital camera Review: 4-Port Switch perfect for mixing 10/100 networks
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using mine for almost a year now with basically a perfect track record. Friends of mine ask why the 4-port switch is worth the extra money. The reason is that you can attach different network components directly to the router without having a performance hit. In my setup, I have my PCs and iMac with 100BT networking into the switch. I've also connected Apple's AirPort base station to one of the ports (which is only 10BT) to provide wireless connection to the internet for my laptop. What makes this so cool is that I can be transferring files from the iMac to the PC over the network, while surfing the Internet downstairs without any performance issues, thanks to the switch. If you put these same computers onto a hub, all would be forced to transfer at 10BT because of the AirPort base station.

If you want to share more than two computers, I would splurge for the 4-Port switch. You could even go the extra mile and wire the house with CAT5 so you, your spouse, and your kids (and even send a wire next-door if you want) can have a nice home network, sharing printers, files, and the internet.

Digital camera Review: 4.9 on a 5.0
Summary: 5 Stars

Add my name to the list of satisfied customers. It's flexible, easy to set up and the price is right (Mom and Dad bought it for me). The only 2 suggestions I have are:

RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX, go to linksys.com and get the latest firmware upgrade.

Go to http://www.timhiggins.com (really) and get plugged into an extremely well informed DSL/Cable modem users community.

That's it, Have fun.
