Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch

Digital camera Review: A disappointing product from Linksys
Summary: 1 Stars

A real disappointment. At first I was very happy with it. It installed easily and worked well. But......2-3 times per day, it hangs. You can't access the internet, you can't access the router via the browser interface, you can't even ping it. The solution is to power cycle it, but this is awkward as there is no power switch. Have to pull the power cable and re-insert.If this happened once a week or so, it would be acceptable, but 2-3 times per day makes it basically useless to me. It's going back. This is unfortunate, as I am a fan of Linksys products (and prices). But I also like Netgear, so I guess I will give them a try.

Digital camera Review: A good idea for networking small/home offices
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this to link up my wife's home office. We both have laptops and we share a printer (see the linksys network print sharing device).

I bought it on the recommendation of a co-worker who is a network engineer. I was up and running in 15 minutes. I also managed to misplace the documentation which familiarized me with their web-site. They have well organized information and technical support as well as good downloads.

For the less technical, the instructions are clear and there is relatively little to do. Also, it proctects the computer attached to the cable modem from being visible on the internet. All of the options can be set through a web-enabled interface.

For the more techical, the box includes a lot of features. My two favorites are 1) a DHCP server meaning that my wife and I can move our laptops from client site to home office without bothering with network setting and 2) software that prevents your computer from being visible outside of the local network. There are a number of advanced features that would allow you host a web or email server behind the device, but I have not bother to use them.

In short, this device has sold me on LinkSys - the combine excelent feature set, easy installation and good prices.

Digital camera Review: A good piece of gear
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my very first foray into the world of networking and other than a little impatience with my own learning curve it was easy.

The walk-through html-based setup program worked well, once the fog lifted from my brain. It was relatively intuitive and easy to understand.

I did not have to use the telephone customer service. It's only been in service a short time so I can't speak to durability, but it just sits there blinking occasionally, and more importantly, working.... It's easier than you'd find on windows. No surprise there but it's a worthwhile read.

The Linksys router is a nice, inexpensive piece of gear and worth the money.

Digital camera Review: A good product with a great price, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

I received my unit yesterday. It took about an hour to get it up and running on my home network. For the most part it has worked flawlessly and is a big improvement in speed over using a Win98 machine and WinProxy as a firewall/router.

However, there is one tidbit of info that seems to be missing from the quickstart instructions (and maybe from the manual -- I looked for it but didn't see it). It is that you must have a crosslink cable from your DSL modem to the WAN input of the router, a pass-through cable doesn't work. It took a bit of trial and error to figure that out.

Other than that omission in the manual, it seems to be a very good product.

Digital camera Review: A great affordable routher that delivers
Summary: 4 Stars

It does deliver. It's very cheap, and installation was as easy as 1, 2, 3. I had never connected a network before, and this took me seriously about 10 minutes...that was all!!!
Now my family is able to get online with both my pcs at the same time, share my printer, share the cd-rom, as well as music & files between both of the computers. I am also able now to enjoy multiplayer games in a different level -- with my own family in my own home.
The routher is very easy to configure, and you just need to know the basics. It does have a bunch of features like port forwarding, dynamic routing, static routing, dmz host, dhcp, and also supports pppoe connections.
I have not noticed a decreased in speed -- I am still connected at a solid 1.4 mbps
For the beginner, for the one who doesn't need the extra bells & wistles, I'd highly recommend it. It's virtually fool proof, and it keeps your network hidden from internet attacks.
Ever since I installed the router, my Norton Internet Security has not warned me about any intrusion attemps or any port searches or trojans.
One thing that I would have liked better is that if it had come with a better manual -- it only comes with a setup guide that's very light on content, but still useful.
You can, however, get the manual online using adobe reader.
Another thing...To make VPN work is a pain!!! I have still not been able to make a VPN connection work; and I've seen many, many users having the same problem. The linksys website is not very clear on how to set it up. I know the right ports to open, but it's still impossible to do. That's one thing you might want to consider if you plan to do VPN connections. Other than that, port forwarding, dmz, and other features work fine for me.
Very nicely done by Linksys. Would have gotten 5 stars if the VPN was easier to set up and configure. Definitely gets 4 stars.
