Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys PLK200 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit

Digital camera Review: Good product - fit for purpose
Summary: 4 Stars

These Linksys powerline adapters are very easy to set up (actually, no set up at all to speak of), and they do what they are advertised to do. They are very good for a workstation that you don't plan to move around the room (like a laptop), and for locations where it is impractical to run a cat5 cable.

Digital camera Review: Good product, life expectancy questionable
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this unit after family member had trouble with the D-Link Unit. The first set I received came with a defective adapter. Two weeks later, the replacement unit finally worked. The product itself is pretty good, easy to set up but like D-Link unit, these unit runs very hot and can be problem in the summer. When the unit gets really hot, a thermal protection circuit kicks in and shuts the unit down. It will only work again after the unit is cooled down. Recently, one of my unit start to act unstable after year and half of service, I decided to update the firmware thinking maybe that's the problem. Well the update failed and I now have a dead adapter. Very frustrating. Given this unit constantly running under extreme hot temperature, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it died only year and half. No wonder they only give 1 year warranty on this unit.

It's a good product, it's too bad it dosn't last.

Digital camera Review: Great Performance
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased these units because I wasn't getting satisfactory performance over wireless between my Net Attached Storage and desktop computers, where I have media stored, and my Netgear EVA8000 where the home theater was. A pair of these and the problems are solved.

They were very easy to set up. The only issue I had there was that the laptop where I first installed the setup software which came with the units had a 16x9 aspect ratio display, and the software did not draw its screens properly there. Everything worked as expected though on my desktop system, with a more traditional flat panel display. (I haven't bothered to report the issue to Linksys or check to see if they have an update to the software.)

Other than that one small glitch (the only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars), it was as simple as anything I've ever done with computer-related "stuff", and since I do that for a living, that's saying a lot.

I would only caution that you know something about your home wiring, as outside the U.S. or with older homes (especially those with 120V circuits; my home was built in '91), certain areas may not have continuous signal between them, rendering the devices unable to provide the netorking.

Highly recommended.

Digital camera Review: Great Product

This is a great product. We have wireless internet and this was a great solution to my son's pc getting internet access.

Digital camera Review: Great Throughput, Poor Quality and Instructions, And Amazon Does Not Honor Holiday Return Policy
Summary: 3 Stars

I recently ordered and installed two of these kits.

On the plus side, they are "plug and play" and they have great through-put.

On the downside, one of my kits had an adapter which was DOA and had to be returned for an exchange. I just had another adaptor go bad that was in service for less than a month. I'm in the process of returning that one back to amazon for an exchange. *

Also on the downside, the instructions for setting up the security function (password) are not very clear.

* Update: Despite that Amazon's return policy for items purchased after 11/1 (I purchased this unit on 11/3) states you have up until 1/31/08 to make a return, someone at Amazon's Customer (dis)Service Center in India just sent me an email stating they would not accept my return because it's past the 30 day cut off. Not wanting to go round and round with Amazon, I contacted Linksys today to attempt to exchange my unit under the warranty. Of course their customer / technical service area is also in India, and I spent well over an 1 hour and a half on the phone with them just to get an RMA. I don't know who's customer service is worse, Amazon's or Linksys'!
