Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 Port Switch

Digital camera Review: DOES work with Brother HL-1435
Summary: 4 Stars

I read reviews prior to buying and was a little unsure whether it would work with Brother HL-1435 printer. As per others' advice, installed printer drivers on all computers first indicating it was connected by usb even if it wasn't - this ensure drivers were installed. Followed linksys instructions and all went well. However, afterwards tried to use Add Printer Wizard and selected network printer option. Was not able to browse for printer but if I entered path specifically in second option (Connect to this printer), I was able to succeed. I used \\LK638DFE\P1 and then was prompted to select type of printer from list after pressing OK on first screen. This was all that was required.

Note also that I did not have to install any software from the linksys CD on other computers (only the first one used to set everything up) to use the network printer. Again, just type in the network path as above and it works fine. All computers on my network are running different flavors of Windows XP.

Only reason I don't give 5 stars is because I think the extra information on setting up printer should have been provided by linksys.

Digital camera Review: DON"T BUY
Summary: 1 Stars

Item needed to be more specific. Item had piece moving in it and was not compatiable with my Lexmark. User refused to refund my money and let me return product. I had to pay a professional to come hook it up because I could not figure it out just to find out it wasnt compatable. I have received no commet from the buy after send info about wanting to return product.

Digital camera Review: Defective out of the box
Summary: 1 Stars

I can't say I wasn't warned, as I had to dig behind 11 returned PSUS4's at my local Fry's to find the one that was factory fresh. After installation, the setup software was able to find the print server on wireless networked computers, but not on wired, even when configured and plugged directly into the PSUS4. I was able to configure the PSUS4 wireless, but was not able to print. It turns out the PSUS4 is not compatible with my HP G85xi. Before throwing it out, I gave it to my IT guy, who had the same problems, and couldn't get it to work on any of his 3 printers. I purchased a Linksys EPSX3 (Parallel print server), setup was a breeze, and within an hour I had 3 computers printing on 2 printers.
My recommendation is to throw a dart and pick any other print server than this.

Digital camera Review: Does not work with Linux - IPP implementation is broken
Summary: 1 Stars

After doing the "safe" thing and getting my printer working under Windows 98 and Windows XP, I started tackling the unix machines on my network under the theory that with IPP and LPD support, this should be easy. It's not. CUPS -> Linksys IPP will simply print your first page over and over until the printer is out of paper. This was tracked as a potential Linux/CUPS in redhat at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=135502
which includes information on how it was determined that this server was to blame.

The workaround suggested in the bug - to use LPD rather than IPP - didn't work well in my experience. basic printing functioned OK as far as printing test pages, but if I tried to bump up the resoltuon of my print job to fully use my photo printer, the server and printer would lock up. I would have to power cycle both the printer and the server to be able to print again.

Linksys apparently isn't fixing this. As indicated in the RedHat bug, they have know about this for years and have not fixed it.

Digital camera Review: Does what is expected of it.
Summary: 4 Stars

Works per specifications. The actual user interface in regards to getting all networked machines to work could be improved ... but that's a wish list item only. Has been working flawlessly (apart from the one or two resets, but probably equally caused by my cable modem/service).
