Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook Adapter

Digital camera Review: "G" WiFi
Summary: 5 Stars

Great Card. I combined this with the (finally delivered) WRT5G wireless "G" router.
Pretty easy setup. Made an icon on my laptop desktop for easy network admin of the card - works pretty slick.
Speeds are just as fast as if I plug in the old hard wired Linksys card (cable ISP)and about 3X as fast as the old 802.11B WAP I just removed. Seems to get much better signal as well (was getting 37% at 100 feet now 97% at same distance).
WEP security was pretty tricky - direct typed in the hexidecimal instead of using the passphrase generator (shudda worked?)
The bonus is I can take this on the road and still connect to "B" airport/hotel/starbucks WAP's.
I'm excited that I upgraded, my wireledd laptop is just as fast as my desktop and fileserver.

Digital camera Review: 0 star and 5 stars so it got 3 stars
Summary: 3 Stars

The CD-rom that comes with the 54G wireless card is outdated. You need to download the latest drivers, or have Linksys e-mail them to you. Otherwise, you'd get a prompt asking for the mprapi.dll file, which does not exist on 98SE. And it screws up the already screwy AOL.

Even with the newest drivers, if you have 98SE and AOL 9.0, or 98SE and AOL 8.0, you may as well forget it. Keep yourself wired instead. So, it gets 0 stars.

The 54G wireless card and the 54G router work well with AOL 9.0 if you are running XP Pro. With XP Pro, it gets 5 stars.

Installation is not as easy as you'd think. Maybe I'm just dumb. Try asking for a tech on the escalation team if you keep running into problems.

Digital camera Review: 802.11G Flat
Summary: 1 Stars

I was looking forward to faster wireless in my home than my older 802.11B card gave me. This card was a severe disappointment. It has far less sensitivity in picking up the signal than my 802.11B card has and often times will not connect at all even though the notebok it is in stays in one location. I have reverted to my old B card for faster and more consistent response.

Digital camera Review: A very difficult company to deal with
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a bad company. I purchased a wireless router from them and, truth be told, it never really worked right. The speed was ok, but it was impossible to set up without tech support and every so often it would simply stop working. When that happened I would be forced to call tech support and spend 30-60 minutes on the phone fighting with them about resetting the router. I recently purchased a new computer and decided to save a little money by moving this router to it. When I called tech support I was told that the router was out of its warranty period and they could not help me... unless I would pay them to. That's right, I would have to pay for the assistance on their product - a working product because it was not under warranty.

So be warned that you are only buying the option to use Linksys' products for a limited time - that is if you have any problems whatsoever that require tech support. I am now trying a Trendnet. Let's see if they are any better.

Digital camera Review: AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE!
Summary: 1 Stars

If I could give this product negative stars I would! Not only did this adapter fail to work on the one XP computer on which I was able to install, their installer completely took out the hard drive on my Win 98 machine. Not a just a system crash... not just a reinstall of Windows... this nasty piece of software required that I format my hard drive and reinstall EVERYTHING from scratch. TWICE! Of course, their tech support people are as clueless as their installer writers. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT!
