Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook Adapter

Digital camera Review: Depends on Operating System
Summary: 1 Stars

Linksys is a very good company, however they are having a lot of problems with the software for this card, from what I hear the WPC54G works fine with XP, however with older operating systems such as Win 98 or Win Me you have a large chance of receiving installation errors. Like other users I have found support to be very unhelpful, they either don't know about the problems or refuse to acknowledge them. They will blame your operating system even thought they are having reports of problems from many users. Check out www.dslreports.com/forum for updates on problems. I'll be returning this one for another brand, its a shame what could be a great product is unuseable.

Digital camera Review: Did not work with Compaq/HP and WINXP (until BETA DRIVERs!)
Summary: 3 Stars

As already mentioned by other reviewers, this card does not work on my Compaq Presario 900 running WinXP. The laptop freezes with 100% CPU utilization as soon as the card is installed. I've tried all the suggestions ranging from the latest drivers, disabling various items in the device manager and configuring WinXP zero config. wireless service. All to no avail! Customer support was sub-par, with the representative basically reading off a script. If you own a Compaq or HP laptop, please save yourself the trouble and DO NOT buy this until someone releases a fix!

!!UPDATE 4/1/03!!: This is no April Fools, Linksys has released a beta driver that did work for my Presario laptop. It can be found on their driver download page. In small print it says: "If you are having problems using this Adapter and you have a Texas Instrument CardBus Controller, please download this driver here."
I needed to install the driver in safe mode, but now it's smooth surfing!

Digital camera Review: Didn't work.
Summary: 1 Stars

It wouldn't connect to ANY wireless networks after installing the appropriate driver from the Linksys website. Straight up rip off.

Digital camera Review: Died!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought the whole package, router, wireless NIC card for a PC and a wireless PCMCIA card for my notebook. Installation is pretty easy on all and the 1st 2 are still up. However. the WPC54G died and I'm playing hell trying to get it replaced.

Digital camera Review: Difficult to install in Win98SE
Summary: 4 Stars

There are several Hardware Versions for this adapter, shown on the back of the device. Depending on this version, one goes to Linksys/Cisco and downloads the appropriate driver/utility (if no CD). I intentionally found an older hardware version 3.0 as this was listed as compatible with Windows 98. Called Cisco/Linksys Tech Support and they said even the newest version 7 would work with Win98SE. Linksys needs to show a Windows 98 tab on the WPC54G Support page. It only shows XP and higher, even on the newer packages.

I'm accustomed to Linksys having different hardware drivers along with their Wireless Monitor. All of these different versions are confusing! Why doesn't Linksys streamline their Wireless Monitor software to begin with? There must be a different version for every product they make. What's wrong with a simple Download link, then select the Operating System, for a universal application?

Linksys monitoring software is finicky. Sometimes difficult to install. This time was no different. I finally got it to work by installing in SAFEMODE in Win98SE. Why hasn't Linksys added this solution to the WPC54G Support page??? Opening a trouble ticket with tech support did not help.

Companies now ignore older versions of Windows. Guess no one wants to be bothered with "old Windows" calls. Would it be too much to ask for Cisco to add Windows 98 info to this product?
