Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT310N Wireless-N Gigabit RouterDigital camera Review: Great Upgrade for BEFSR41 Summary: 5 Stars
I needed to upgrade my old BEFSR41 (wired router) which served me well but did not have WIFI for my new laptop. This guy comes with 1G ports! That was a vast improvement over my old unit, which ran at 100M. Now I not only enjoy the security of my wired PC's (4) but also can link it to WIFI equipment (50!). The WIFI is fast.
Caveat: I had a problem reaching one of my PC's in my network. The problem turned out to be McAfee firewire protection. Some residual setting was blocking inbound traffic. McAfee resolved the problem for me, but because it took me a while to understand why this was happening, I hope I can save some of you time that have the same problem.
I'm very happy with this unit and it has the advanced security encription which I have installed and use. Now I have higher wired speed, increased security and WIFI!
GO FOR IT!
Digital camera Review: Great except for crashing twice a day Summary: 1 Stars
This product would be great, except that it crashes frequently and needs to be rebooted (by power cycling it). Typically this happened at least twice a day. It would happen almost instantly under heavy traffic (e.g. streaming video to my mac). I tried upgrading the firmware and that didn't help. I think the problem is a software bug, but it is possible that it is overheating related, although I had the router in a well-ventilated space. In any case, it made the product very annoying to use.
I finally gave up and bought a netgear WNDR3700, which so far has not crashed at all.
Perhaps I got unlucky somehow, but based on my experience I would strongly recommend against buying this product. It is disappointing since I had good luck with previous Linksys products.
Digital camera Review: Great router! Summary: 5 Stars
I was really looking into the E3000 but the price made me think about it. The only difference that I cared about was the dual band capability. After thinking about it, I didn't really care enough for the price difference since I don't have any N devices yet. I do have Gig Ethernet devices though, so that's what made me choose the 310N. Another thing is that I was looking for a router solely to install DD-WRT firmware on it because it has features that I need and router with that feature included cost way more. So, I bought the 310N, installed DD-WRT, configured my settings as needed, and now it's been running for 6 months without a hitch. Great range, handles the load of 3 people in the household streaming Netflix at the same time (in HD) in 3 different TV locations in the house wirelessly, while working on 2 laptops wirelessly. The range is also better than what I had before. The Gig Ethernet works as great as expected, also, and at the same time as above. So I'm happy with it.
Digital camera Review: Great router, so far Summary: 5 Stars
Found my NetGear router dead (unsurprising after reading forums and reviews of the model I had), so I replaced it with this one. It was very easy to setup and it supports WMM (wireless multimedia) and QoS which was important to me since I have the T-Mobile Blackberry Curve that can do calls over WiFi. I did not install any software and had no problem getting this thing to work with my Macs and PCs -- however, I have had several LinkSys routers in the past, which made knowing how to set this up without installing software pretty easy.
Beware, what another reviewer said about this router not being a "true N specification". It is fully compliant with the latest draft standards. It uses MIMO technology (40MHz wide bandwidth), and operates in both the 2.4GHz and 5.2GHz spectrums. And it is true gigabit ethernet for wired devices (the spec sheet does state gigabit, several times actually. I checked the sheet, and I'm getting gigabit throughput between my two wired machines plugged into the router. It's also important to realize that gigabit is way faster than even the fastest DSL or cable modem, so that measure of speed is only relevant when communicating between 2 computers that are both plugged into this router via an Ethernet cable.) Buying this won't get you a faster connection to the internet.
UPDATE: This route is STILL working great for me. I've had it for 18 months now and not one hiccup. Most Linksys routers I've bought in the past would have died by now (for no apparent reason), but this one is still going strong. Works great with my MacBook, iPhone, and PCs.
Digital camera Review: Great upgrade from Wireless-G Summary: 4 Stars
Before upgrading to the Linksys Wireless-N router I was using a Linksys Wireless-G. The reason for the upgrade was that I was having frequent wireless connection problems that were only fixed by re-setting the modem and router. The last straw was when I added an Apple Airport Express to my wireless network with the intention of streaming music from my Mac to a home entertainment center in the other room. It didn't work. The Wireless-N solved all of the problems. I had some problems configuration however tech support did an excellent job of getting me up and running! My only complaint was with the install CD that came with the router which my Mac didn't recognize and was useless on the PC - it actually caused problems with the set up that tech support eventually identified and helped me remedy. Overall a great product!
