Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster

Digital camera Review: A fast and stable wireless router.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using this router for well over a year and have to say that it is one of the best, if not the best wireless router on the market. I first bought a D-link DI-624, but after using it for a few day, I realized it was more trouble than it was worth, the signal would cut off every now and again, and it was a headache to setup. I returned the D-link and got my WRT54GS. It worked right off bat and was a breeze to customize. Linksys is owned by Cisco Systems (a huge networking giant which is used in many big business networks), I was surprised to find that their consumer brand was just reliable.

Since then I have had the router turned on for more than a year (not all at once), and have yet to have it drop a connection or annoy me. I keep the firmware updated (something everyone should learn to do), and keep my network WPA secured (another thing everyone should learn to do).

Now that I have my desktop connected through the ethernet, and my laptop wireless connected, it is still as stable as ever. I have a netgear router (not wireless) at home which needs to be rebooted every week or so due to slow performance, and tends to stop working from time to time, requiring a short break. Needless to say I bring my linksys while I'm home to use in its place.

I recently added on a high gain antenna and it increased the range slighly (there are also alternative firmwares which boost power output). Getting a signal now in my library from my room, I couldn't be more happy.

If you're looking for a router which does exactly what it says, I don't see how this linksys wouldn't fit your needs.

Digital camera Review: A good high-bandwidth router
Summary: 4 Stars

My Belkin router began performing poorly during high-bandwidth times (ie. downloads, gaming, tivo, etc). I spoke with several people about an inexpensive replacement since I work in the IT field. Almost everyone of them said Linksys. With such a strong lean toward Linksys, I decided on buying one and went with the SpeedBoost version, since I do a lot of in-home networking as well.

It is a great router and I would recommend it for most. Here are my pros and cons:

Pros:
- Fair price
- Linksys = Cisco
- Many configurable options (including parental controls)
- Its fast and can handle tons of bandwidth

Cons:
- Initial setup was WAY more complicated than it should be
- Should have come with directions for intermediate/advanced users
- Using their setup software was an awful experience
- Does not wall mount

All in all I am pleased with my choice.

Digital camera Review: A very difficult company to deal with
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a bad company. I purchased a wireless router from them and, truth be told, it never really worked right. The speed was ok, but it was impossible to set up without tech support and every so often it would simply stop working. When that happened I would be forced to call tech support and spend 30-60 minutes on the phone fighting with them about resetting the router. I recently purchased a new computer and decided to save a little money by moving this router to it. When I called tech support I was told that the router was out of its warranty period and they could not help me... unless I would pay them to. That's right, I would have to pay for the assistance on their product - a working product because it was not under warranty.

So be warned that you are only buying the option to use Linksys' products for a limited time - that is if you have any problems whatsoever that require tech support. I am now trying a Trendnet. Let's see if they are any better.

Digital camera Review: A very good product, but beware glitch in set-up
Summary: 4 Stars

This router provides a high-quality signal and was, in theory, easy to set up. But the CD provided by Linksys somehow failed to interact with the router software correctly about three-quarters of the way through the setup process -- a factory-programmed password wasn't accepted. Fortunately, the 24.7 help desk was easy to reach without a long hold time and was able to help me get on the Web and walk me through an alternative setup process. The ease of getting help was quite a change from what happens with many vendors.

Digital camera Review: A winner
Summary: 5 Stars

Wireless routers under $100 are a mixed bag right now. Most models get a heavy share of negative reviews.

Against this trend, the LinkSys WRT54GS is an absolute gem. It configures quickly, has a full set of options, and keeps running day after day. My WPA2 connections have been blazing fast with a variety of non-LinkSys receivers.

There are minor caveats. The installer sticks in an infinite loop if you have a fixed IP. Just set your IP/DNS to automatic and query the router directly. The config screens are a little clunky, and the current v5 doesn't have enough memory for the open source drivers.

But those are tolerable issues for a robust, reliable router that does what it's supposed to.
