Digital camera Review: Best wireless G rounter and access point Summary: 5 Stars
As a router:
I bought this product five years ago to access internet in several devices at home as this one had best reviews among routers in Amazon.com. So I won't bother telling you how good it was as a router.
As a access point:
But last year when I moved to new house, I needed to widen my network signal range for the house. And an access point was also necessary for my internet phone and desktop computer that are located separately from my router (due to strange cable setup in my house) and that require wired connection to AP. So I first thought about selling this old router on ebay or something, and then buying new N router and access point that might cost around $200-300. With little internet research, I found out that I could use WRT54GS as a wireless access point with firmware update. After buying D-Link DIR-655 N router, an hour of updating firmware and setting the access point, there was $100 perfect and new network system for my house. It's been a year since I use it as an access point. I have never had any problem with it.
In conclusion, if you are considering wireless G, I strongly recommend this product as a router and access point for its reliability and versatility.
Digital camera Review: Best wireless router for the price Summary: 5 Stars
I have the Linksys WRT54GS router for a year now and it's been working very well. It offers a wealth of security features such as WEP, WPA-PSK using TKIP or AES, MAC address filtering and the ability to disable SSID broadcast. It's been running solid without the need to reset it for any reason and it recovers itself even after a power failure.
Setup is a breeze. Just make sure to follow the security guideline that comes in the box - changing the admin password, SSID, WEP or WPA, etc. The newer versions of the firmware allow the configuration to be saved in the file, which can be loaded later to restore the saved settings. It is a good idea to go to linksys website and check for the latest firmware.
I'm very glad that bought the WRT54GS router and I am using WPC54GS and WUSB54GS with it with very good results.
Digital camera Review: Better Than D-Link Summary: 4 Stars
I have had the WRTG54GS for maybe 2 years without any trouble with the router until I added a slingbox and 7 wired and wireless network cameras accessible over the internet. Even then my only trouble is sporadic and only requires me to un-plug and re-plug in the router. I am not sure why this happens but I feel it may have something to do with the different camera types and slingbox or from some other programs I have running or their settings. This is a very easy router to setup and use as well as changing any settings.
With 400 reviews you really dont need mine, but I also have a wireless D-Link router and I have had un-pleasant experiences with their tech support and just wanted to advise you to try and contact tech support and ask some questions before you buy anything. I have had some experience with U.S. Robotics wireless products in the past and they had great tech support at the time. Sorry I dont have time to go into details.
Digital camera Review: Better than the rest!! Summary: 5 Stars
Replaced my old WRK54G with this unit. The WRK54G was dropping connectivity about 2-3 times per day, so I decided to buy a USED WRT54GS for $25 bucks. I mirrored the settings on the new one and swapped them out. Now, I have no dropped connections as of yet. I can watch my Roku with no problems and in 4 days, I've had zero dropped connections. Before, my laptops and my Roku would lose connectivity and I'd have to unplug my router and plug it back in.
I cannot say enough good things about the "tried & true" WRT54GS. I'm buying a backup one just to have laying around in case something happens to this one.
None of the new "N" routers can even compare to this thing. The bad thing about "N" routers is that they run to the slowest connection that you have attached to it. so if you have one wireless "G" device connected and one Wireless "N", it will only run at "G" speeds. In my case I have one Macbook that has a "G" card that is on 24-7 and another laptop running a "N" card that is not normally on all the time. So I can only run at "G" speeds anyway. Therefore, why should I waste money on an "N" router?
