Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys WUSB300N Wireless-N USB Network AdapterDigital camera Review: Adapter is great, but the included software network monitor can really suck Summary: 4 Stars
Here's my story:
i bought it on ebay for $60. To save money on monthly bills, my neighbors and i planned to share their DSL router/line. When it came in the mail, my neighbors weren't home, but I went ahead and installed the program (says "install before plugging it in") and plugged it in. After about 30 seconds, it showed me a beautiful list of 10 live wireless networks in the building. Their signal strengths ranged from 30% to 80% (my next door neighbors), but keep in mind that all of these are Wireless-G or Wireless-B routers (it says in the program what they are), so I am impressed with my adapter's signal-receiving capacity. Then, since my neighbor's weren't home I connected to some random network that wasn't secured (only for temporary purposes, of course!), and voila! I was online less than 5 minutes after opening the box.
Then, my neighbors came home, and I decided to be the good citizen and stop riding on free internet but connect to my friends. Strangely enough, after typing in the network password, the network monitor (a little notification icon in the windows xp system tray) popped up and said "connected". Woohoo!, right? NOPE! apparently, the network adapter was working fine and connected, but the router was not giving me an IP address. I went over to my friend computer, logged into their gateway, and saw that about ten other computers were getting IP addresses but NOT MINE! Why?, Why?! I quickly came back to my own computer and fiddled around with the connection options. After setting DHCP options to both my computer and the router, I still got "no or limited connection - router is not giving you an IP address". After going through all the advanced settings for my adapter, my firewall, the router, and the router's firewall, still I got that message. After forcing the same IP address to my computer and to the router, still no connection.
Eight hours of poisonous, mind-wretching agony later, I got so sick of the stupid Linksys wireless network Monitor (the program) that I closed it altogether, prepared to delete it off my computer, and switched to using the basic windows xp wireless connector. I typed in the password for the hundredth time today, and watched as it connected perfectly.
stupid Linksys Wireless Network Monitor.
Anyway, the adapter's great, but you should consider if the network adapter speed is your limiting factor. The DSL line that i'm sharing has a max down speed of 1.5 Mb/s, so my connection speed has never even remotely touched the blazing 150 Mb/s as advertised.
Other notes: the included usb extension cables are pretty long. Mine goes from the front of my computer (under the desk), around the back of the desk, and up to the top of a nearby shelf. Must be around 6 feet long.
IT's about the flat-size of a modern cellphone, and about as thick as a plastic cd case (jewel box, or whatever they're called). With its two antennae up and the small blue notification lights, it looks pretty sweet but at 3 am a little like a mini demon.
compatibility with wireless-G was not an issue at all.
Summary of Cisco-Linksys WUSB300N Wireless-N USB Network AdapterThe Wireless-N USB Network Adapter is the simple way to add wireless connectivity to your notebook or desktop computer. Just connect it to your PCs USB port and enjoy incredible high-speed wireless network access, at unheard-of distances distances. The Wireless-N USB Network Adapter uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-Ns Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce dead spots in the wireless coverage area. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to 4 times farther than standard Wireless-G. With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. It works great with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the throughput can be increased even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds up to 12 times as fast as standard Wireless-G. The Linksys WUSB300N Wireless-N USB Network Adapter lets you access the fastest and most advanced wireless solutions currently available. With this unit enabling your PC or laptop, you can run media-intensive applications at amazing speeds, without the hassle or expense of stringing a lot of wires. The Linksys Wireless-N USB Network Adapter uses the very latest in wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's Multiple-In, Multiple-Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Whereas ordinary wireless technologies are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually makes use of these reflections to increase the range while reducing dead spots in the coverage area. This means the signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections at up to three times the distance of standard Wireless-G, so the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. This Wireless-N adapter is fully backward compatible, so it works great with standard Wireless-G and -B routers, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N enabled, you can experience increased throughput by using twice as much radio band, which allows speeds up to 15 times that of standard Wireless-G. To help protect your data and privacy, this wireless adapter can encode all its wireless transmissions with iron-clad, 256-bit Wireless Protected Access (WPA2) encryption. Yet, despite a robust and deep set of features and functionality, configuration is simple and easy with an included web browser-based configuration utility. The incredible speed of Wireless-N networking is ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and voice-over-IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams at the same time, without worrying about a degradation in performance. The Linksys WUSB300N Wireless-N network adapter is easy to use, and can be plugged in to any open USB port. To experience the full advantages of Wireless-N technology, it is highly recommended that you use USB 2.0. This unit is FCC, CE, and IC-03 certified, receives power through its USB connection so it doesn't require an external power supply, and is backed by a manufacturer's limited three-year warranty.
