Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter

Digital camera Review: Awful with Windows XP SP3, Windows 7
Summary: 1 Stars

I had nothing but trouble with this device. First I had Windows XP, and it worked briefly on Win XP SP2, but as soon as Windows Update automatically updated me to Service Pack 3, it stopped performing properly. Extremely slow connection, and Windows kept trying to reset the network adapter. I eventually got Windows 7, thinking that maybe this would solve the problem, but no.

I called tech support from Cisco/Linksys; they were not able to help.

Eventually gave up, and bought Hawking HWUN3 Hi-Gain USB Wireless-N Adapter with Upgradeable Antennas for Mac & PC (White)from Amazon, which has worked fine (although the installation CD wouldn't install its driver, and I had to go online on another machine to the Hawking website, get the driver, put it on a portable drive, and then install it onto my Windows 7 machine. Since that time, perfect).

I would avoid this Linksys/Cisco product if I were you.

Digital camera Review: BEWARE
Summary: 1 Stars

Just bought this to work with Linksys G router (which I bought to replace a constantly failing Belkin N1 router). The Linksys router was easy to set up - works well with a wired Vista desktop and a wireless XP laptop. However, when I connected this Linksys USB adapter to a desktop in our garage, I get a 'Limited or no connectivity' message. Too far away, you say? Well, I have almost direct line of site to the router and this desktop had at least SOME connectivity with the Belkin N1 (the worst router out there right now). My Dell laptop gets 'Excellent' signal strength (at 54 mbps on G) when placed next to this desktop. The desktop's 'signal' is 11 mbps and when I actually try to connect to the router or Internet, it cannot do so at all. When you go to the Linksys support page for this product, you san see several users who are having the same problem and getting no help from Linksys. Unless you plan to put your wireless USB adapter within 24 inches of the router, don't get this adapter. It's weak.

Digital camera Review: Beware Windows XP Users : Wipes out user login screen
Summary: 1 Stars

Beware! If your OS is Windows XP and your computer is configured for multiple users who use login screen of Windows XP, this device will disable user login. Linksys support will not provide assistance as they say this product was designed to purposefully prevent use of multiple user login interface built into Windows XP. Search the Internet on:

Linksys WUSB54GC Windows XP User

to see many descriptions of this problem.

Digital camera Review: Beware, display image is misleading!
Summary: 4 Stars

The image displayed above is not what they send you. That model in the photo is actually the WUSB54GSC with SpeedBoost model. What you DO get is the WUSB54GC, as indicated, which is a black usb model. You can confirm this on the linksys website, as there are two versions of this.

I was a bit let down by how I was deceived, however the product works great. For Windows 7 users, you have to manually download drivers from the linksys website, as the drivers on the cd it comes with do not work for the Windows 7 operating system. Somewhat of a hassle, but after successfully installing the drivers, it becomes plug and play thereafter anytime you use it.

Signal strength is great; I'm using it right now and have no problems. All in all a great product for the price, but I wish they'd change that image to the correct one, as to not deceive future customers.

Digital camera Review: Close Range and Wide Open Space
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a Windows 7 64-bit user and there are only a few choices to choose from if you want to go wireless because of compatibility issues. This wireless usb device is one of the compatible ones but definitely not the best choice because of its limited range (which I am aware of). But how limited is limited? I live in a very small apartment, my living room is probably around 250 sq.ft and my wireless router is stationed within it. My PC is located about 13 feet from the router and they can clearly see each other. When I first used this device, I plugged it into one of the usb ports at the back of the pc. Excited, I powered the pc on to check my connectivity, the connection was flawless except for one thing, my internet became so damn slow. I have an 8Mbps service and it's only registering 512Kbps. So I said to myself it couldn't be the wireless usb's fault because it is practically next to the router. What I did next was move the wireless usb to the front usb port. Lo and behold, my internet connection went back to normal.

So there you go, this device has short range issues and demands wide-open space. No biggie if you live in a small apartment like me.
