Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander WRE54GDigital camera Review: A working product Summary: 4 Stars
I need a range expander because my wireless router is in the basement, and the signal in the most out side bed room on my 2nd is not good. I select the Linksys expander because my wireless router is from Linksys.
Before I buy it, I read the reviews from Amazon.com, most of the reviews are about difficult experience during the configuration which made me nervous a little bit. My network has WEP enabled, I was wondering what I would experience. Fortunately, the installation and configuration is not that bad for me, I followed the instructions on the manual carefully and it took me about 20mins to set it up. Once I finished the setup, I moved the expander to my 2nd floor. Now I can plug it in when I need it and unplug it if I don't (I want as less wireless signal as possible, there're too much electronic radiations in this world). My experience which also comply with the manual is that if you have security turned on in your network, don't use the auto config button. Also I remember somewhere in the package it says "install the cd before install the expander", it confused me at the beginning, but I decided not to follow it but just follow the manual instead which turned out worked for me.
So now I have very good signal in my 2nd floor area if I turn the expander on. But my dissapointment is that the expander is not as powerful as I expected. It's just basically another wireless router to the most.
Digital camera Review: AGREE- DO NOT BUY THIS Summary: 1 Stars
I am a systems designer and I couldn't get this piece of cr&p to work. I have several other Linksys products that have worked great for years. Don;t even bother with this - I have had the same troubles as the folks who have the red light blinking.
Digital camera Review: Absolute Junk, Don't Waste Your Money Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this range expander for obvious reasons. I have spent about 24 hours trying to get it to work. Now I read on some forum that it only works with two specific Linksys routers. That was not mentioned anywhere noticeable on the box(which I threw away after I got it) nor is it anywhere in the documentation, which I still have.
Digital camera Review: Absolute Rubbish Summary: 1 Stars
I saw the reviews posted regarding the difficult configuration and chalked it up to probable user error, or people getting an early edition of the product. As a moderately capable software engineer, I wasn't overly concerned about configuring the device and expected by mid June any early production problems would be resolved.
I was wrong.
Do not buy this device unless you have a full day to dedicate to the configuration. At some point (in my case less than 20 minutes) you will exhaust all the scenarios covered in the scant documentation and will be left with no choice but phone support. This is where you need time, don't plan installing at night or the weekend, as there will be no phone support. Expect to wait an hour or more to speak with someone. After you get connected to someone, then you'll be given the pieces of information necessary for configuration such as the default ip address of the device!
Digital camera Review: Additional setup comments Summary: 4 Stars
One comment I'd like to add is that during setup, if you have MAC address filtering enabled, you either need to disable it or add the expander's MAC address to your list. Once I did that, setup was easy. It's working great!
