Digital camera reviews of Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander WRE54G

Digital camera Review: BAD repeater , BAD
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought 1 brand new. The instruction/manual was completely unclear, and the setup process failed 8 times before it all of a sudden succeeded. After installing the repeater which is suppose to boost the signal strength it turned out that it only got 10% better than my existing wireless signal. So what's the point having this repeater? I put the repeater at different places in my house and finally found a place where the stregth is like 80% BUT non of my computer can ever get connect to it. So I still have to connect to the original wireless network that I am trying to fix w/ this repeater. This device is bad. I am returning it for sure. I got a dlink instead. it's been shipped to me as we speak.

Digital camera Review: BE CAREFUL OF THE VERSION NUMBER
Summary: 1 Stars

WHEN TRYING TO SET UP FOR 8 OR 10 TIMES WITH A D-LINK ROUTER, I GOT INTO A LOOP OF "NOT ABLE TO FIND WRE54G IN RANGE".

THE NICE TECH SUPPORT IN INDIA WAS QUICK TO INFORM ME THAT MY VERSION 1 WAS INCOMPATABLE. HE SUGGESTED TO RETURN IT AND BUY VERSION 2 OR 3.

BE SURE AND READ WHAT IT IS COMPATABLE WITH ON THE BOX OR IN THE TECNICAL DESCRIPTION ONLINE.

I WOUND UP BUYING THE D-LINK DWL-G710 - IT IS COMPATABLE WITH "VIRTUALLY" (I HATE THAT WORD) ALMOST ALL ROUTERS.

Digital camera Review: BEFW11S4 Users can now use WRE54G v2 - hooray!
Summary: 5 Stars

The original specs for the WRE54G did not include my wireless router, BEFW11S4. I emailed linksys, and they replied:
"Wireless-B Broadband Router - Version 4 model BEFW11S4 v4 with firmware 1.50.14 was tested to work with WRE54G v2 (Wireless Range Expander version two) with firmware 2.01.10 or 2.01.11. The second version of the device has an Ethernet port at the mid portion."
Now the tricky bit is to identify a V2 model, as there is no change to SKU number, package, or anything! I finally got Best Buy to open the box and look, and there was a sticker that said V2. The addition of an Ethernet connection in the middle of the device was the other clue. Anyhow, it set up, auto-configured in seconds, and I now have a very good signal in the whole house!

Digital camera Review: Be Careful
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought the expander and found the instructions were not helping me to install. The during the first call to Tech Support it was apparent they do not understand the product. She said she would get her supervisor to help, but after 40 minutes on hold I called again. This time I got a person who was even more helpless, she got frustrated and either hund up or we got disconnected. During the third call the tec worked for two hours and then said I was up and running, however, it became apparent my sinal strength did not increase. My fourth call was made on day two and again I got a person who got frustrated and we suddenly got "disconnected". My fifth call (by now I have been on the phone a total of SIX HOURS) was a person who was pretty good, but after two hours she told me to take the expander back because I needed a Version 1 not a version 2. I honestly do not know if it is worth trying a version 2. Their technical support is horrible. I onwed the product for two days, spent a tremendous amount of time with their tecnical support teams, but have no idea if the product works! I am not certain I would have given it a One Star, but I could not go lower.

Digital camera Review: Be aware - MAC Address issue!
Summary: 4 Stars

Tried auto config, tried manual setup, no dice. Tried with WEP, tried without. Finally figured it out - if you have MAC Filtering security enabled on your wireless router (which any security savvy homeowner should), you have to enter the WRE54G's MAC address (on the unit's bottom) into your router's filter settings!! Otherwise the router will refuse its connection! Haven't seen this mentioned on any documentation or help sites.
