Digital camera reviews of Corsair Flash Voyager 32 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive CMFUSB2.0-32GB

Digital camera Review: Better than advertised?
Summary: 5 Stars

The Corsair 32Gb Flash Voyager flash drive: I love the design of this product, though I do wish it had cap that was impossible to lose. No worries however, I figured out a way to 'wire' the cap to the main body of the drive. It has a little 'button' on the top of the cap that will allow you to attach a fine steel wire to the cap and then the main body of the drive as well.

I tested this drive using the following: The data source was a Glyph Firewire 400 external hard drive connected to a year old MacBook Pro ( C2Duo running @ 2.4 Ghz w/ 2Mb RAM running OSX 10.5.5 ). I connected the Corsair to the MBPro via the nice USB extension cable that was included in the Corsair package.

I selected MP4 movie files, a DVD's worth of PDF files and several 16 bit and 24 bit 2 channel audio files - 14.64 Gb of data in 194 files which were located in 5 different directories that also had to be created on the flash drive were used for this test. None of the files were larger than ~1.5 Gb.

Result? - Total transfer time was 23 minutes and 24 seconds. That's 0.62994863 Gb/minute or 10.499 Mb/sec. I left my disk utilities open and watched disk activity while the transfer was taking place: it reported peak transfer rates of 17 Gb/second - good enough for me. I like the performance and see no reason that the drive should perform more or less efficiently on average due simply to the size of the file being transferred. It is possible of course that the condition - or health - of the OS you are running combined with the state of the computer hardware you have attached to will have a bearing on your performance results. I'm a happy guy.

Digital camera Review: CORSAIR Flash Voyager ThumbDrive
Summary: 5 Stars

Fastest USB drive I've ever used. I can even digitize to it directly from my Sony HVR-Z1U camera. Built really well too: I accidentally drove over it with my car and it still works. The rubberized casing seems to take abuse rather well. All in all, an excellent product. Love it!

Digital camera Review: Carefully Consider Planned Usage
Summary: 4 Stars

I more than echo the sentiments of the recent reviewers preceeding me, decrying the horribly slow write speeds. If you are buying a USB thumb drive of this 32 GB capacity, you likely are anticipating transferring a substantial amount of material. In such a case, I would recommend that you do this overnight, or on a day when you won't be using your computer, not only because so much time elapses in the transfer, but also because that process slows down a 3 GHz computer to little better than a crawl, so you just can't work efficiently. You could also transfer material in small aliquots, but I suspect that most people with a large amount of material would best "take their medicine" and relegate the transfer to a large single session of idle time.

If this drive will be used to backup sensitive material, and you are carrying this around, say, on a keychain, it would be wise to encrypt the drive, or a folder which can be encrypted and placed on the virgin drive. Either of these options can be accomplished with a well reviewed freeware program, TrueCrypt, which works very nicely. I elected to encrypt the entire drive, since I was only going to use this as a backup repository. Obviously, if the read and transfer speed is as slow coming back to the hard drive, recovery of large amounts of information will be equally painful, but at least you have it if need be. One downside of the encryption is that you have to have the TrueCrypt program on the computer where you are using the file, even if you use the traveling version. If you are interested, you can read the relevant documentation on TrueCrypt's site.

Please note that I have absolutely no vested interest whatsoever in TrueCrypt!!

Bottom line is that this is a well made, well functioning drive which handles transfer and usage of routine sized files and folders efficiently; however, for those anticipating frequent large data transfers, this drive format poses severe obstacles in view of its slow writing time, hence the deduction of one star.

Digital camera Review: Corsair 32 GB - It's the size that matters
Summary: 5 Stars

I Have inserted it into my laptop and so far have had no problems. The cap stays on nice and tight when not in use. Nice blinking light when in use. There is a neck strap, but was put together wrong. When sewn the fabric was twisted and then sown together. It would have been better if it was not twisted. All in all a keeper.

Digital camera Review: Corsair 32GB Flash Voyager
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this flash drive. It has PLENTY of room on it for my needs. I back-up all my data from QuickBooks, my calendar, client photos (tons of those), word documents (a gazillion of those), and whatever other data I have, on a daily basis with this little thing!

I also back up to disk. But there is no point in backing up to a disk in the office if the office burns down or a hurricane knocks the building over, or whatever. This little disk has it all and it goes with me wherever I go.

An added benefit is that I have access to the data wherever I am and was happy to have it with me at a time I didn't even figure on needing it!
