Digital camera reviews of D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless 108G Gaming RouterDigital camera Review: Do not buy this router, it has a high fail rate Summary: 1 Stars
I bought the router in March of 2007, started having issues with flaky wireless in May, then it finally died. I had to pay to cross ship a new RMA'd router. This second DGL-4300 lasted less than six months before it bricked itself all together. So in December 2007, I call up and explain it's bricked, they RMA it again. However I don't want to pay for shipping period. I run into a brick wall with RMA, and including the head of the RMA department, who claimed he didn't have a boss. I got around this by calling they direct cooperate number and asking for the person he reported to. I got Van, he seemed nice enough, and cross shipped it with no charge and sent me a label to send the bricked one back. Ok so I get the new DGL-4300 last week on the 27th of December 2007. The radio has become flaky and now no one can connect to it. It didn't even last a few months, not even a week. So far this is a 100% failure rate for a router that cost's more than other routers out there, double what I paid for my netgear that still works fine 4 years later. Which I'm having to use right now.
Digital camera Review: Easy setup and outstanding performance Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this as a replacement for my DI-624, another quality D-Link product that lasted me almost 6 years (I had it running/downloading 24/7 and the wireless chipset began to give out; usually routers only last 2-3 years with heavy use like that). This is one quality upgrade...
For starters, the DGL-4300 has a high-quality (not sure if it is high-gain or not) antenna out of the box which immediately gave me a better signal throughout my home. The Admin interface is easy to use and has many more features than its predecessors. Be warned though: this is a "gaming" router, and all of the Admin function revolve around this principle, with port profiles for many popular games.
It does not have to be used exclusively for gaming, so don't be turned off with all of the jargon! The GameFuel technology it boasts is simply a fancy way of saying "bandwidth prioritization," and can be used for *anything* including VoIP services (so your call quality can be clearer). However, I am a gamer and used it "as advertised" for my X-box Live connection and instantly began to see better performance through online play, even when my wife was downloading music on her PC!
Security is easy to setup, with the option of 128-bit WEP and WPA methods, as well as MAC filtering (in order for any device to access your signal, they would need to have its unique MAC address stored on the device). Bottom line: no one will be accessing your signal without your permission!
All-in-all, this is a great upgrade for anyone with an older wireless router, and probably the best starter router anyone could get without new 802.11n technology. I highly recommend it as well as any other D-Link product.
Digital camera Review: Easy to use Summary: 5 Stars
I read some reviews where people said it took hours to get this thing working. It took me literally 1 minute to get it working. As long as you have basic computer knowledge this thing is easy to use. It works great, I am very happy with it.
Digital camera Review: Echo earlier review - this is the best router I've ever owned Summary: 5 Stars
In short - this router is excellent.
First impression: Sleek, black router, with nice blue LEDs (looks great in the dark :). Appears finely crafted and pretty sturdy. WiFi antenna is larger than other routers, which I suppose is a good thing.
Tech specs are impressive (altough 108 Mbps WLAN isn't top of the line anymore - 802.11g has been trumphed by 802.11n), but the Gigabit LAN ports and the 100 Mbps WAN port means that this router gives you room to grow, both inside of your house, and on the link to the rest of the world. 100 Mbps WAN access means you will be able to take advantage of high-speed fiber internet and the coming generation of Cable modems.
Setup: Setup is a snap - it is very easy and good-looking in your web browser (setup also works in FireFox, which is more than I can say for some other D-link routers :/ ). The router automatically checks your WAN connection when you boot it up, making setup easier.
Works with no problems whatsoever in a mixed PC environment, using Macs, Linux boxen and Windows PC's.
It supports WPA2 for maximum WLAN security - if you do anything more important than casual browsing, you should not use WPA, and under no circumstances WEP!!!
Last thing, the specs does not mention this, but the LAN ports are NOT switched, so if you care about in-house data security where the router is to be installed, get a secondary Gigabit switch to hook all of your LAN computers up to, so others cannot do packet sniffing on your network activity.
In short, highly recommended, despite the high price tag.
