Digital camera reviews of D-Link DGS-2208 8-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch

Digital camera Review: Boy did this fix my network overload issue
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a issue where I've converted my entire home network to 100M Ethernet. But, kept some of the older 10/100 3Com switches that did not support non-blocking. So when I did a large (Norton Ghost) transfer from one of my machines to my storage server the entire network ground to a halt.

I put this switch in front (acting as the backbone switch) feeding the other legs of the network. Magic, all works at super speeds (not gig but FULL 100Mb) to all machines in the network. My next step is to strategically upgrade the NIC's in some machines to Gig speed but for now I'm very happy at the ease that this installed and how well it actually works.

Digital camera Review: Cheap, fast, reliable
Summary: 5 Stars

My title pretty well sums it up. Cheap, fast, reliable. Not to mention easy to use. I just plugged it into my existing router (which was full) and presto! Room for more devices!

Digital camera Review: Cheap, run cool, save power
Summary: 4 Stars

I have 3 of these D-Link DGS-2208 8-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch running on my home network and they've all been on all the time for the last 6 months with no problems at all. These are unmanaged switches and you just plug them in and go. The 8 ports are all autosensing so you just plug everything and there's no need to worry about anything. The switch is supposed to turn off unused ports to save power and to adjust power consumption based on the lengths of the cable runs. My three switches have been running cool with no problems. One of them is in a structured wiring cabinet so it's not getting much ventilation. For the price (around $40) these are an outstanding value. I haven't done any performance testing so I can't tell you what the performance is like but I don't experience any problems at all on a relatively complex gigabit home network. We even use them in the office when we run out of ports in conference rooms or cubes and I don't think we've ever encountered a problem with them at all.

Digital camera Review: Compatible With HomePlug AV
Summary: 5 Stars

I have D-Link DGS-2208 8-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch connected with Actiontec HomePlug AV, and routed the remaining ports to Sharp Aquos LC-52XS1U-S, Samsung HT-C6730W, HP Home Theater PC, WD TV Live (all in living room) and Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ (in kitchen). The Desktop Switch is low power, and works reliably since day one (I had it since 2nd week of July 2010). I always have home network and internet connections. I never have to reset the power or network connection.

Digital camera Review: Cool and simple
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a DGS-2208 (HW ver C1) mounted in my enclosed wiring cabinet, which is in the wall of a walk-in closet. I love the fact that this switch uses little power and runs cool. The 8-port version was only slightly more costly than the 5-port version, and it allowed me to connect all rooms permanently. Installation was a snap, and performance is impeccable.

The only minor imperfection is that I can't tell the difference between 100 and 1000 Mb/s connections from the tiny leds -- they all look the same color to me. This doesn't matter in regular use because there's nobody in the closet looking at the leds (it would be nice to have an option to turn all leds off to save more power).
