Digital camera reviews of D-Link DIR-655 Extreme-N Gigabit Wireless Router

Digital camera Review: AVOID Until 1.32NA Fixed!
Summary: 1 Stars

After 30 days, the DIR-655 could not pick up a WAN address from Comcast. I started with FW 1.21 and tried all the downgradeable FW versions before reluctantly upgrading to 1.32NA. There's no change. Dlink support has strung me along for a week now... "Please reset, reset, reset". My PC connects just fine directly to the (dlink) cable router.

An old Belkin G router connects just fine.

(sigh) Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a Linksys. No more Dlink for me.

Digital camera Review: Absolutely Blew Me Away!
Summary: 5 Stars

Hi:

I hardly ever write reviews, but this thing is so cool I just had to write one. When I received this router the set up disk did not work and I always get angry off when I call a tech support line and I am put on hold for 30 minutes and then get someone where I know more than they do, but I tried anyway. To my surprise they answered on the first ring and the women support person had me up and running in five minutes. My speed more than doubled from 30 MBPS to 65 MBPS. Web pages load instantly and my wireless media player never has to be rebooted and it never freezes like it was with the Linksys Router. I am absolutely astounded at how easy this whole process was, because usually it's never easy and that comes from having a computer since 1982 so I have had my share of BS trying to get things working properly. There have been plenty of times I have been up all night on something like this, but not this time. I would recommend this router to anyone that wants a GB Router that works and sets up with ease. I couldn't be happier. D Link must realize that customer support is just as, or more important than price. In this case it's a fantastic price with fantastic customer support. The only companies that I can think of that are this good are Amazon and Apple. The rest are in the dark ages. If D Link continues to put out products this good with customer support this good and unsurpassed, they will put everyone else out of business. They sure have my vote.

Phil, very happy in WI

Digital camera Review: Addressed All My Routing Needs
Summary: 5 Stars

We needed a replacement after our old router started to misbehave. After reading mostly positive reviews I tried a cheaper Cisco-Linksys. It had a major issue with DHCP (as was described in some of the negative reviews) and I had to return it. The more expensive D-Link was my second attempt to get reliable internet.

First of all, automatic setup did not work, but I had absolutely no problems with a manual set up. If you know what you are doing, don't bother with automatic setup.

Second, you can share a USB device through the router, but not every USB device. For example, my Lexmark Prospect Pro205 printer did not work. However, the printer has a wireless capability and I connected it to the router with no issues.

After that, everything worked great: wired, wireless, streaming HDTV, printing, etc. The router is somewhat of an overkill for basic home use (I am still exploring all the features). However, cheaper routers proved to be simply unreliable in my experience. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase - 5 stars.

Digital camera Review: Adequate machine.
Summary: 5 Stars

I found the D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N wireless router adequate for my needs. I found nothing to complain about. Handles my 15Mb connection just fine. Internal networks between wireless-N vista machines and wired gigabit connected servers performed just fine. Server to server 1000Mbps is running many times faster than my previous 100Mbps connections. The wireless N runs much faster than my 54Mbps.

5 stars for a good unit with plenty of futures and nothing to complain about.

Digital camera Review: After a little fustration installing, it works fine.
Summary: 4 Stars

The install wizard didn't work for me (no obvious reason) and technical help was not that helpful, but after playing with the the manual installation it's finally happy with my network. No problem connecting my "g" standard wireless laptop, and the connection strength is stronger than ever. More importantly, my network is now buzzing along at 1gigbit speed (don't forget to upgrade all of your network cards as well).
