Digital camera Review: Configuration is very lacking

The hardware and the basic functionality seem to be adequate. Easy to set-up, work as expected. But the configuration is very lacking.
First, the passwords can only be 8 characters long, and you can't even have symbols. If you want to log in automatically using your windows login, it forces you to choose a crappy password for your windows machine as well due to the restriction.
Second, a share cannot have different rights from different users. As soon as you add another user, it'll create a new share. What's worse is that you can't even name the share. For example, ideally you want one "share" where Fred has RW access, and Tom has R only access. Well you can't do that. It'll create two shares. And you can't even name them "Fred Share" and "Tom Share" -- they're stuck as "share" and "share-1".
So if you get this for home use and you don't care about security, this works great. For home users that are security conscious, this is usable but requires you to use workarounds. For small businesses this is simply unusable.
I'd imagine this can be fixed with firmware upgrades. But who knows if D-link is committed to this product enough to address these issues.
I haven't looked at any of the competitor's product (such as Linksys), since I've already regrettably purchased this. But I'd advice checking those out first.

Looked like the perfect NAS solution, and the instructions were simple - until I tried to install t. The software did not recognize my drives, at all.
Tried to call D-Link support, but hours on-hold is not practical. Three emails to tech support went unanswered.
I will never buy a D-Link product again.

Installed the device with 2 1.5TB drives no problem, but the POWER on/off button was very hard to depress. I took the cover off, it was easier to power on that way.
After installing the software I got an error msg upon reboot prior to windows starting, NODE 3 LINE 73. I had to reset the machine in order to get it to come up. When windows finally came up the software immediately started the un-install process.
I called D-Link support, they were useless. I spent a week answering repeated questions and or they dummied up about my past communications. This is frustrating when you can not get an ENGLISH speaking tech person on the phone. I gave up...
Called FARSTONE support, I was given some suggestions and it is still not working (SFOTWARE). I should not have to go out a purcahse backup software for a device that came with it. I will give FARSTONE a few more days...
Thinkg if doing a RMA.

Very nice little unit. Easy to setup. Easy to install. Unit works well, as well as the uPNP streaming to Xbox 360 (which works out of the box with the standard setup). I was a bit worried about the Xbox streaming as I had read about difficulties in the internet, but nothing to worry about for my setup, which was a basic home wired network. The only thing I didn't like was the blue LED which is bright, and NEVER turns off, even when the drives power down.
One more thing, this unit is SMALLER than it looks in the pics. I think they would sell a lot more if they put a coffee mug next to the advertising picture to give a sense of scale. Very nice design and solid construction.

D-Link 323 is Outstanding product for any home network, allows multiple RAID configurations and in combination with proper hard drives, expends network capacity and data backup. Two of D-Link 323 units recently added to my home network to a total of 8TB network storage capacity. Great solution for media storage such as family pictures, movies, music as well as any other data. Helps unload computer hard drive for software and files intended to run from local drive.
Positive and good experience with D-Link 323 product.
