Digital camera reviews of D-Link DPG-1200 PC-on-TV 802.11g Media PlayerDigital camera Review: An Unbiased review Summary: 3 Stars
I'm rating this item based on my personal experience in stress testing this product for a home-based wireless media network. My rating of 3 stars references my general feeling of the product, not weighing in its glaring flaws. "its OK" is the name of the 3 star rating, and that's exactly what this product is. If you want to use it directly wired to a network, NOT using the wireless feature, "its OK". However, if you want to use it wirelessly as most people do, this is a failed product. Let me explain more about my testing.
A friend came to me last autumn (sept 2009) and wanted my opinion on the DPG-1200. So I decided to get one for evaluation purposes and test it out for him, with my side goal being a hopeful addition to my own home network. Setup of the software worked fine on my quad core intel rig running windows vista 64. This system is wirelessly connected to the network via wireless G to a verizonDSL router located on the ground level of my home. So the signal goes through the floor and has to travel maybe 50 feet. I'm using a very cheap ($15) usb wireless adapter that works flawlessly. I've had zero issue with it.
In the same room as my rig, I hooked up an old TV(CRT, not flatscreen) and connected the DPG-1200 to it. To make a long story short, I managed after a lot of fumbling to get the wireless to work. I anticipated this setup to be bad or unplayable, and that's what it was. The signal had to go wirelessly from the server pc to the dsl router then back up to the DPG-1200.
Having passed(failed) the first test, which was my worse case scenario test, I decided to hook the DPG-1200 on the same old TV moved downstairs where I could directly connect the DPG-1200 to the router via an ethernet cable. This test worked, but not flawlessly. My tests were done with hulu desktop streaming. The picture was fine, but quite frequently the sound would seperate from the video, and there was stuttering at times. The remote was also very choppy when trying to navigate, and needed to be directly aimed at the unit. I attributed the choppiness of the remote and video/audio due to the fact the server was wireless, and the internet signal came into the router and wirelessly went to the server, which sent a desktop image to the dpg-1200 wirelessly.
My next obvious test was to hard-wire via a super long ethernet cable my server to the router. I did this, repeated the hulu testing, and had near flawless results. the remote was more responsive, and there was no video/audio separation or stuttering. This test was a complete success.
Finally, I pulled the ethernet cable from the DPG-1200 and set it up wireless again. I had the same issues as my first test, even though the DPG was a mere 2-3 feet away from the wireless router. Playback was horrible when it actually worked, although it did work slightly better than the first test where the server was wireless as well.
My final determination: This device does what it says it does when you have the server pc and the dpg-1200 both connected to your network via ethernet cables. When the DPG-1200 is set in wireless mode, results are not consistant and range from slightly to not working at all. By slightly I mean I can at least connect and stream the desktop for very short periods of time. It is not at all suitable for viewing videos this way. I did spend quite a bit of time tinkering with various wireless settings, and that did make a huge difference in performance...unfortunately it was just wasn't enough.
I kept this unit only because I thought up a use for it involving the server pc and the dpg-1200 both being connected to the network via ethernet. For most people I reccommend staying away from this product. It will cause you far more grief than it is worth, when there are other products on the market that succeed in doing what this device claims to do.
