Digital camera reviews of D-Link DWL-G730AP AirPlus G High Speed 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Pocket Router/APDigital camera Review: Converts a Wired Internet Connection to Wireless Summary: 4 Stars
The hotel we stay at in Tokyo has free internet access in the room, but it is not wireless. The connection is through a cable, which works great if you have a laptop and can place it on the desk next to that cable. But what if you have an iphone or ipad? Those devices do not have cable connections. This little device fixes that problem. You hook it up to the cable supplied by the hotel, and this device creates your own little wireless network in your hotel room (or wherever). The initial set up may be a bit difficult - I had a friend do that for me. But, once it is configured, it works like a charm. You just insert the internet cable and plug the device into a power outlet and you have an instant wireless network. That's it. The entire device, with its connections, fits into a very small carrying case that is easy to take along on trips. I'm very happy I bought this little device.
Digital camera Review: Cool little router/AP/bridge Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this purely as a travel accessory. My parents have broadband, but no wireless, so the access point seemed very nifty. So I crack it out and realize is also a router and a bridge ( which they call client mode ). Oddly enough this may be the least expensive wireless bridge on the market right now.
It does WPA encryption and all the web front end is easy to figure out.
The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that it should really have two wired ports for router functionality. If it did you could plug it into a switch and get all the capability of a full size router.
The size is amazing. It is smaller than my cell phone. It runs on 1.5 volts and comes with a USB power cable, a flat 3' network cable, and a regular power converter. The case is small, holds everything, and fits nicely even in small laptop bags.
Digital camera Review: Could not configure properly, does not pass AppleTalk Summary: 2 Stars
I could not get this device to work properly in client mode, despite many years experience setting up wired and wireless networks. (My router is a D-Link Gamefuel wireless G.) It would frequently lose its settings for no apparent reason, and I'd be forced to reset the device to factory settings and start all over again. Also, it does not appear to support AppleTalk over wireless. This is the first purchase that I've returned to Amazon in 10 years.
Digital camera Review: Cute, but doesn't do anything Summary: 1 Stars
It's easy to set up, but then just sits there. No connectivity. No errors. No help or instructions. It askes you to type in addresses in places that do not exist and gives errors to the default settings.
It should not be called easy to use.
Digital camera Review: D-Link DWL-G730AP Wireless Pocket Router/AP w/ Client Mode Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this wireless pocket router to attach it to the Power Inverter (located in my gargage near the door opening) from my PV solar system so that the data (KWH) can be sent to the internet wirelessly for viewing and monitoring. This pocket router communicates with my regular internet wrireless router/modem in my house.
I followed the set up instructions that came with the unit. The set up wizard was not clear as to how to enter the key code so the installer had to call in for help. On top of that its range is somewhat limitted (~40'). After some re-positioning, the unit worked fine. No problem since.
