Digital camera reviews of D-Link Wireless 108AG Gaming Adapter

Digital camera Review: Works Great for DirecTV On-Demand
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this with the D-Link DGL-4300 for DirecTV On-Demand service and have no problems whatsoever. I have the Model HR20-700 satellite receiver. It has very fast download speeds and WPA2 encryption was smooth to set up. I have this one set about 90 feet from the router and the signal strength is excellent. I'm going to purchase more of these adapters in the future when I add more HD DVR satellite receivers.

Digital camera Review: Works great once configured. Had great trouble accessing the web config (solution included).
Summary: 4 Stars

Works great once you get it configured. It works as a wireless bridge for anything it seems. Just a wired connection as far as what you connect to it is concerned. I can successfully connect a laptop and my xbox 360 using this wireless bridge. I seem to have the latest copy with current firmware (1.02) (lebelled right on it), so I didn't even have to update it. For me, I got a good price, so it was well worth it. Once it works, it works.

I found the web config tools to be very easy to use and follow. The config wizard got it working in a few steps. I simply entered by wireless network SSID (my network doesn't broadcast itself for detection), and my WEP encryption key with the same settings for my wireless network. After configuring, I had to turn off and on the device and my xbox once for it to work.

However, I had a terrible time trying to connect to the web config from a computer first. A PC, a laptop, and my xbox 360 couldn't access the configuration. I ended up figuring it out and can now access it. I think they key was that you have to be on the same subnet to access it, and it expects 255.255.255.0, but my other computer & PC use 255.255.0.0 by default. So here are the steps I followed to eventually access the web config.

1. If necessary, turn off firewall & security software.
2. Connect ethernet cable directly between a computer & device
3. Fix Computer Network settings to match what the device expects.
3a. Open Control Panel, then Network Connections
3b. Right click Local Area Connection, choose Properties
3c. Scroll to Internet Protocol, click Properties button
3d. Select radio button: Use the following IP address:
3di. IP address: 192.168.0.9 (Normal ranges assigned by router are 192.168.0.x)
3dii. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (must be on asame subnet)
3diii. Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 (the default gateway is the IP address of the router it should be 192.168.0.1)
4. In Internet Explorer, type: http://192.168.0.30
5. Enter username / password for the device. If still at default or if you just reset it with the button on the back, username is "admin" and password is left blank. You can alter the password once in the web config.
6. Run the wizard or adjust any settings you want.
7. When done, reset computer network settings to what you had before, such as automatic.

Disclaimer: This is just what I did to get my computer to connect to the web config on the device. Use only at your own risk. If you do not know what you are doing, or if you forget how to set it back, or for any other problem you might encounter, you might not be able to access the internet through your normal connection. This or any other problem is your risk and responsibility.

Digital camera Review: Works like a charm
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this to hook my DishNetwork DVR up to the internet so I could program it remotely via my iPhone. It was easy to set up and works great. It attaches to my Linksys wireless router and I plugged the DVR right into it.

The three flashing blue lights may get on your nerves at night, but you could easily cover those up.

Digital camera Review: Works pretty well most of the time...
Summary: 4 Stars

I had some trouble configuring it, but that was probably my fault. Once I got it up & running with my Linksys wrt54g using WEP encryption(64-bit I think) I was happy and haven't touched it since.

It seems to work very well when gaming on the xbox or xbox360, bridging from my downstairs office router to my upstairs loft. However, we watch a lot of tv/movies that I stream from my PC downstairs to the xbox, and after a certain amount of time (could be an hour, could be 3 hours) my network speed drops down to almost nothing and then will eventually conk out. The solution seems to be to turn it off for a while, then turn it back on and carry on from where I left off. My guess is that the unit is overheating a bit when dealing with a constant stream of high-bandwidth data.

I can live with that though, and this bridge works well for our needs. I'd recommend it to people. It works great with the xbox360 & xbox live, and works well for streaming data from my PC to my old xbox.

Digital camera Review: Works well once you get it set up properly
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this to hook my satelite receiver up to the internet. Setup was a pain and I wound up resetting my router's wireless security to get it to work. Setup on a security enabled network involves plugging the unit into a computer and manually configuring the computer's TCP/IP settings before you can get to the configuration screen to input your security key.

Hooking it up to an Xbox or on an unsecured network would probably have been much easier.

After that I just plugged it into my receiver's ethernet port and it was immediately recognized. The unit is very compact and isn't much bigger than a deck of cards. Overall I'm very pleased with the way it works. It's an excellent low-cost way of getting any ethernet equiped device hooked up to a wireless network.
