Digital camera reviews of Dell Axim X5 400 MHz Pocket PC

Digital camera Review: 5gb drives? not on this
Summary: 3 Stars

This is just my humble, experienced opinion with PocketPCs, I do not own this Dell because I did some extra thinking ...

I used to always tell people to avoid Compaqs but in the PocketPC niche there is just no beating an IPAQ. The reason isn't the initial price (Dells are cheaper to get the catch-up marketshare) or the processors (All new ones worth buying are 400MHz) but the expandability.

After you own your pocketpc for a few days you realize that the brightest screen and the most flexible expandability are the things that are really the most important.

Ipaqs have been around a long while and the case format is a standard. Because of that the expansion options are not limited to CF & SD cards as are the options for Toshibas and Dells.

I am right now watching a widescreen movie on my 3835, jitter-free stereo MPG1 ripped with a $49 Linx usb cable. It's rolling off of my 2GB Toshiba PCCard drive ($70, $150 for a 5GB). This is a PCMCIA card not a CompactFlash, the largest CF drive you can get is the MicroDrive which is 1GB for $350.

I looked real hard at the Dell when they announced that they were dropping the PalmOS for PocketPC2002, but without all the options (esp the PCCard sleaves) it became just another Win-PDA, not a "I can use this for everything".

Maybe Dell will eventually offer more, but right now there are years of sleaves for Ipaq and HP has said that they will stick with the case style so that all older sleaves will continue to be fully useful (I heard a 5 Year pledge on a newsgroup).

If this is your first PocketPC, keep this in mind or I guarantee in a few weeks you will be wishing you had not jumped at the lower base cost. 3970/75s or 5450/55s are worth a harder, closer look. I'm moving up to a 3975 to get the brighter screen, and if I wasn't so into movies then the 3835 would still be my 100% killer.

And if you're thinking PalmOS because there seem to be more software titles? Watch out .. Microsoft wants the market and so they are releasing the .net CompactFramework for developers in April; That makes coding the PocketPC a breeze compared to developing for Palm, this is going to make the amount of titles available for PocketPC soar in 2003
