Digital camera reviews of Dell Axim X51v - Handheld - Windows Mobile 5.0 - 3.7" color TFT ( 480 x 640 ) - Bluetooth, Wi-Fi

Digital camera Review: Beautiful, power hungry, fiddly construction
Summary: 3 Stars

I have had an X5 for years (5 stars) which I upgraded from 2002 to 2003 (bad move). I've had the X51V for about a year.

The display is beautiful but with 4 times the pixels the machine is slower than the X5 even though the cpu is 50% faster. Mapopolis is actually easier to read on the X5 because the lines are thicker.

The physical design has compromises that really detract from the system. The battery has a plastic cover back with a microswitch that's constantly getting triggered and shutting down the system. There is no power plug, you have to use a dongle to connect the power plug to the connector on the base. This is a terrible design and might have stopped me from buying it at all had I known about it.

It's thin and compact but I'd trade all that for a more robust design. With a 2G SDcard it makes a very, very good MP3 player.

Digital camera Review: Beware! Dell's customer service is horrible!
Summary: 1 Stars

I had purchased the Dell Axim x51 and had many of the same problems that are listed in these reviews. The battery would drain overnight and it wouldn't power on without doing a soft reset almost everytime. When I contacted Dell's technical support within 2 weeks of receiving the Axim, they told me how to "fix" the problem. That fix only lasted long enough to put me outside of the 21-day return policy. So when I started having the same problems, they said they would replace the unit but failed to mention that it would be a refurbished unit. I felt that I deserved a new Axim since it stopped working within 2 weeks of receiving it, so after many chat sessions, they agreed to let me return it for my money. Well, this is when my real problems started.

It took me about 6 chat sessions and 4 phone calls to try to track my return. I was repeatedly told they could not help unless I had a tracking number from my shipping company. Unfortunately for me, the gentleman who told me how to return my Axim failed to mention that I MUST ship the product using a trackable shipping service like UPS or FedEX. I shipped it through USPS, and bought the insurance "just in case." Luckily I did that because I was able to pay an additional $3.45 after the package was delivered to show proof that the package was received by Dell. Even after recognizing that I was not told the proper way to return the product, the representatives would tell me that they were not able to help me. Many phone calls later, and many hours on hold only to be "disconnected", I finally got to speak to a manager. She assured me that after faxing my delivery confirmation, I would receive my credit and that she would call me personally to follow up. That was supposed to happen yesterday, but of course, it did not. So I am still waiting for my credit.

I advise everyone to think twice about buying Dell products because their customer service is horrible. It has been almost 3 months since I purchased the Axim and the problem has yet to be resolved.

Digital camera Review: Caveat Emptor
Summary: 1 Stars

My Axim worked extremely well for three weeks until a one pixel line suddenly appeared vertically down the center of the display. Just to note, I'm really careful with all my gadgets and the unit was never dropped or misused/abused. This line on the display did not disappear so I decided to call customer service. I've spent countless of hours on the phone getting bounced around and having numerous 'case numbers' assigned to me. Three months later I do not have a replacement for the faulty Axim. Of course there are a lot of pros with this product and all of them have been covered by other reviewers. However, beware if something goes wrong with your Axim and you need to contact tech or customer support in India.

I like making video phone calls with my new Dell Axim X51v PDA. I when to www.instantstream.com and setup an account, the guys at instantstream call me up and installed streamphone on my PDA and sent me a video cam. In about 3 minutes after getting my web cam i made my first wireless video call to my friends and wow, I have made many many more video calls and video conference meeting while sitting in my local Starbucks on my T-mobile hotspot account. ...
