Digital camera reviews of Dell Axim X51v - Handheld - Windows Mobile 5.0 - 3.7" color TFT ( 480 x 640 ) - Bluetooth, Wi-FiDigital camera Review: Good but needs trueVGA Summary: 5 Stars
This item is great. My only complain it that the start menu bar and the bar at the bottom of the screen are too large. ozVGA and other trueVGA utilities fix this, though, though not entirely without new problems. I highly recommend it, though you might want to look at the other Pocket PC's that have the newer Intel processor.
These can be upgraded to have 128MB RAM, and you can even upgrade it to Windows Mobile 6, if you look hard enough.
Digital camera Review: Good device that crashes a lot! Summary: 3 Stars
This uses the the Mobile 5 operating system and the new version of the Active sync. 4.1. Unfortunately the system is not very stable and crashes a lot. I can not recommend this purchase until microsoft and Dell fix the bugs.
It is fast and is great when it works, but has a lot of problems. Here is a short list of the most critical issues:
- the battery lasts only 2 days (without using it) if you have an SD card plugged in
- crashes a lot and the soft reboot button has to be used to turn it on
- the new version of Activesync (4.1) uses TCP/IP stack and this has made it incompatible with many systems, where version 3.8 worked just fine. Unfortunately it is not backward compatible with the old version.
Someone stole this from me. It was as if they gave me my life back. One of the best things to happen to me. Using the Palm 700p and am much happier.
Digital camera Review: Great Handheld Device That is Unfortunately Out of Market Now Summary: 5 Stars
The Dell Axim X51v handheld is a valuable purchase for the price. After many months using it, I just couldn't find any flaw I could complain of. It has a robust design yet it is lightweight. Easy file sync via Microsoft ActiveSync. Quick navigation through shortcut buttons available at the front bottom. Bluetooth incorporated that works well. Available slots for both Secure Digital and Compact Flash memory cards. Windows Mobile which is the most complete OS when it comes to PDAs, in my opinion.
Of course that a minimum of prudence will keep your equipment working nicely and for a long time. Don't expect your PDA to shock resist if it falls from the third floor of an apartment building, if you try to run too many applications at the same time, if you install dubious software or if you tap the screen as if you were about to make a hole through it. This is just like any other computer. Be reasonable and careful and everything will be fine.
I can reliably carry my eBooks, my agenda, my calendar, my address book, my dictionary and my notes anywhere without fearing loss or lack of energy. Highly recommended.
Digital camera Review: Great PDA, but slow on some games and PIM usage. Summary: 4 Stars
The dell axim X51v is a nice unit. Small, yet has CF,SD,WiFi/Bluetooth, It's downfall for me is that it is slower than my HP Ipaq 4705 and has a screen that is definatly not as nice. Color depth os 4096. the resolution is, however, 480X640 so it's sharp. I think the contrast ratio is maybe just not as good as the Ipaq. Preformance wise, it does well. Some of it's "slowness" is due to the Win Moble 5 OS. As PDA's goit is worth the money though. I did have to hard-reset it once for some unknown reason. Good thing I had a backup. The CF cardis definatly faster than the SD. I advise loading programs to the CF rather than main memeory. It will slow them down a bit but not bad. Now for the PIM operation. It works fine, but is just slow. It's not bad after first using it as long as you don't do a soft reset. Also, use the buttons to access the calendar/contacts rather than the screen icons since using the screen icon makes it act as if it first started up and it takes some time to allow going to a spacific contact. Note that I do have over 2000 contacts in it, so this may be part of the reason it's slower. The Ipaq is a lot faster though. Battery life is decent but I did do the Mods shown on Dell's forem. Be sure to get a good case as the crappy one it comes with gives little protection. This is common with most PDAs though. I would give it a 5 if the screen were as nice as the Ipaq 4700. I think the 4700 is discontinued though.
Digital camera Review: Great Performance and Design Summary: 5 Stars
First thing you'll notice about this excellent PDA is the brilliant screen. The resolution is 640x480 and it looks spectacular. Movies and games look absolutely great and text is very easy to read. The system itself is very fast, (other than boot up after a soft reset, which takes 10-20 seconds) and the Windows Mobile 5.0 is a welcome addition. No longer do you have to worry about losing your data because the battery died.
It has both a Compact Flash and SD slot for expanded memory. Dell includes a host of software on the system as well as more on the included discs. Everything you need from word processing to powerpoint, even 3D games is included, (not all software is free, some is trial). And speaking of 3D capabilities, the X51v is no slouch. The 624 MHz version plays anything you throw at it. Quake Mobile runs perfectly on this machine and looks fantastic doing it. The overall 3D capabilities are just outstanding.
The design and feel are great and the buttons on the side are well placed. There is a voice record button as well as as a wireless access button. The directional pad on the unit could be a tad more intuitive, but the only need for that is games. The unit is solidly built and feels that way.
Overall I think the X51v is a very capable machine and quite possibly the best PDA on the market.
