I see lots of 4 and 5 ratings for this product (including mine), and then a couple of 1's. Here's my guess of where those few poor ratings came from. The repeater base unit has an antenna input connector where the XM antenna plugs in. In the box it also comes with what looks like an 'antenna' module, which is really a receiver of the repeater signal. It may be tempting to plug that receiver into the base unit without thinking, and try to use it as the antenna? I know this sounds pretty dumb, but the plugs are compatible, so that's my guess. When used correctly (that is, the old antenna you were using before you got this device plugged into the base unit and the receiver module plugged into the XM receiver), this thing works well! I haven't tried to see what the range capability is, but it does give me a good signal from a couple of rooms away, and does NOT require line of sight. Truly plug-and-play design that was quick and easy. I didn't have to look at a guide to set this up; it was perfectly obvious. Now I can locate my XM radio in my home office "cave" and locate the XM antenna where the sun shines and there is a path to the signal coverage. I'll take this with me into the work office someday to have the benefit of XM where I sit - - well away from windows and satellite signals. I bought this directly from the manufacturer as soon as it came out (and paid more than the Amazon price), but it is definitely worth the money. I can only get XM reception in one room of my home with the XM antenna precariously positioned on top of a curtain rod. It was very frustrating to have to deal with that (I almost sent it back and cancelled service), but this repeater takes care of the problem! I can now use the MyFi as it was intended to be used--as a portable device--in every room of my home. The only drawback is that the device is a little unwieldy at times because you have to keep the MyFi in its dock when you bring it to another room and you have the repeater antenna attached to that dock. It can be a little awkward lugging all that hardware around. If you are going to simply place it on a table in another room to listen, that is fine, but if you want to hold it in your hands, i.e., on your deck or patio, it can be awkward to have all that equipment attached to it. Another minor drawback is that the device can get very hot (the repeater itself, not the antenna) and also it doesn't appear to have an on/off switch, so it's "on" all the time. I don't know how many watts it draws, but that might be a problem for some people. Other than that, it is absolutely wonderful if you have a problem getting an XM signal in your home.Digital camera Review: Excellent - A must have!

I purchased this item on the advice of a friend, who had a similar problem with satellite reception in his house. He indicated that it would be a breeze to set up, and he was right. After using a compass to find a south-facing window, it literally took 5 minutes from the time I open the box to the time I was able to turn on my satellite receiver. And when I did turn on the receiver, the results were immediate - clearest reception ever!!! I even moved the receiver to several points in the house, including the basement, and got the same crystal clear results. Problem solved.......
