Digital camera reviews of Discovery Expedition Entertainment ProjectorDigital camera Review: Exactly what I was hoping for... Summary: 5 Stars
I don't understand the bad reviews on this. It's a low-end projector but it does what it says it will. I received it for my birthday this week and love how it is lightweight and simple to set-up. I've used the higher-end and much heavier projectors for work and provided you have a dark room, this will do the same trick. Plus, it was on sale for $50 at one of the major office supply stores just last week!
Digital camera Review: Excellent for the price Summary: 4 Stars
Got this on sale here on Amazon for $60. For the price, this little unit is a lot of fun. I give it 4 stars only because the construction feels a little bit cheap even for the price. I would not have every considered purchasing it at $200, but it is definitely worth the $60! Here is what I thought of it:
BRIGHTNESS: Some reviewers are saying it's too dim even in a dark basement. I disagree- even in my bedroom with the curtains drawn at about 3:30p I was able to see the picture just fine on the wall. I think the bulb does take a few minutes to warm up all the way. It's not as bright as real projectors, but it is definitely not too hard to see.
COLOR: The colors are a little washed out, but again, it's not a professional projector! There is a color adjustment and contrast adjustment on the side, I will be playing with those more to see what I can get out of it.
SPEAKERS: The sound was fairly loud, but with limited frequency range. Still, perfectly acceptable and nice that it does have something for sound. It has audio-out so you can plug in real speakers if you want more sound.
FAN NOISE: The fan noise is a non-issue unless you are watching a silent movie. It was easily drowned out by even the built-in speaker audio. Perhaps not acceptable compared to a real projector, but really a non-issue.
FOCUS: I found that the focus worked well, though still a little blurry around the very edges. But overall not bad. Also, the box says you can project 6' away from the wall/screen, but I projected about 12' away without a problem. It is also pretty forgiving if you're not projecting straight-on with the screen/wall, didn't get too distorted.
CONSTRUCTION: Built a little light, they could have made it feel sturdier even at this low cost.
Digital camera Review: Glad I took the chance. Summary: 5 Stars
I read the negative reviews all over the web about this projector, and was nervous to even try it. Well, it was on sale on Black Friday, so I took the plunge. I'm so glad I did, because it performed better than I was expecting.
YES, the image is grainy if you make the image size 6-8 feet across.
YES, the produced image is a little less bright than what you would normally expect from a movie theater projector.
But, this product is perfectly good enough to watch some kids movies on the wall, or play some video games all blown up. I watched a couple of movies, and feel like I made a great purchase.
One other thing to realize- When you project a movie and wind up with a 6-8 foot wide image, you will think it looks grainy just like you do when you sit one foot in front of a television.
Put this projector on maximum distance from the wall, then move back as far back from the movie as possible, and you will see that the farther away you actually go from the image, the clearer it looks. This just seems like common sense.
I get the idea from other reviewers that they expect to blow up a movie to ten feet wide, sit right in front of it on their couch and expect it to look perfect without any grainy appearance. HELLO!??! They wouldn't sit a foot away from a TV would they?
Some reviewers mentioned the fan being too loud, and that the built-in speaker was insufficient. I disagree. The speaker was actually really good on my unit, and I didn't even hear the fan at all, laying on the floor 2 feet away from it. Don't pay attention to those people, this thing exceeded my expectations by a mile.
How I got it setup properly: Hung a white sheet on the wall, because it is assumed white backgrounds will work best. Put DVD player and projector on foldable TV dinner table about 12 feet out from the wall, with the projector on top of a box so that I didn't have to tilt it up too much to have the image positioned at the top of the wall. Then I turned on video source BEFORE turning on projector, then turned on projector. On the projector I adjusted the contrast by pausing a dvd when text was on the screen. Then I adjusted color. Then I focused the lens by turning the lens housing. I was also able to adjust brightness and contrast directly on my DVD player as well.
Bottom line is if you have kids, and they would get a kick out of projecting movies and games real big on the wall, get this thing.
One more thing you need to know: When you turn off the projector, the red light will flash, and the fan will keep going. This is normal. The fans in most projectors keep running to cool down the unit before totally shutting down.
Digital camera Review: Good for the price but don't expect HD TV quality Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this for under $40 at Macy's after Christmas sale. I didn't expect much and I got what I expected. In a dark room it displays a nice although very grainy low resolution picture on a wall. Kind of cool for under $40 but I wouldn't pay much more. HD TVs are so cheap now and the picture quality is much better.
Digital camera Review: Great For What It IS Summary: 4 Stars
This product does exactly what it is intended to do; namely provide some fun and entertainment for the odd occasion when you want to display an image on a wall or perhaps against the back of your house on a summer evening. Viewed in it's proper perspective, this projector will provide fun for kids and the kids living among us all. It's certainly not an HD projector, and it certainly is not meant to replace or take the place of a tv or large screen tv.
I've read all of the negative reviews and simply cannot understand what the expectations are for a projector that utilizes a standard halogen floodlight bulb that can be bought at Home Depot and is easily replaceable and costs WELL under $100 (and that I purchased on a Black Friday special at Kohl's for darn near half that). Sure, it's not crystal clear and crisp in image. Sure, the sound isn't dolby stero. Sure, script and written images aren't clearly legible. But darn-this thing projects dvd images (particularly nice if you've got a ton of older black and whites such as I record from TCM) and produces acceptable sound which can be enhanced by plugging in an inexpensive pair of PC type speakers via the headphone jack. If I use this a few times a year in the backyard with family/friends it will suit my needs.
If you want to spend $500 for a DLP HD projector with a bulb that will cost you major bucks to replace and that's your application, great. If that is the case, you're comparing apples to oranges. If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive novelty type item that you can kick around and have some real fun with-this fits that bill. For me, blowing up the image gives a sort of faux theatre experience, even if the image is not pristine.
