Digital camera reviews of Dynamo Illuminator Wind-up LED Flashlight

Digital camera Review: MVP Dynamo Led Flashlight
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased 6 of these flashlights two years ago for 72 hr emergency kits. Updating the kits this week we tested each flashlight and found 3 of them had died. All 6 had the led clear poly carbon plastic cover fog up. What happened was in storing the flashlight the Li-ion battery fully discharged and with out some type of charge it killed the battery rendering the flashlight useless. These are great flashlights if you use them one a month or so to keep the battery charged. The battery problem isn't limited to just this type of crank flashlight but all all crank flashlights with batteries, they will eventually die.

What I liked about the flashlight is its really easy to use over the shake type models.
Grip design allows you to comfortably power it
Variable light output big plus
Led brightness is acceptable as an emergency / power goes out flashlight
Great price for intended purpose

What I didn't like:
Battery life
Led clear poly carbon plastic covering fogging

I'm now looking to replace these with a capacitor dynamo flashlight such as LightStorm CL1.

Digital camera Review: My personal experiment results
Summary: 3 Stars

I have one of these. It's ok for keeping in the car and/or camping. It produces light which is the point. Mine does not give enough light for me unless I am cranking while the light is on. I've tried the crank, then turn on and it just doesn't hold the charge very long at all and the light dulls pretty rapidly. I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the battery or what... it's brand new. For a test I took my crank light and my grandpa's shake light outside to compare them and the shake light works so much more efficiently. I shook for the same amount of time that I cranked (30 seconds) and the results were majorly in the shake lights favor. It was nice and bright and held the brightness while my poor little LED crank light dulled out and never even got to the same brightness of the shake light. They're pretty evenly priced, so if I could go back I would definately be getting a shake light.

Digital camera Review: Not very bright
Summary: 3 Stars

This flashlight produces a fairly dim, smoky bluish light that is disappointing after all the reviews claiming the light is bright. It's not. Still, I guess that fact that it doesn't require batteries may be reason enough to have one on hand.

Digital camera Review: Output quickly deteriorates. Other options available
Summary: 2 Stars

We purchased two units. Our kids love reading in bed, and they sometimes prefer using a flashlight rather than a reading lamp. Plus, there are all the other good reasons to have dependable emergency lights.

These units provided a moderate amount of light - a bit dimmer than typical 2 D cell flashlights. And, that was OK with me.

However, the amount of time that the unit would provide light quickly decreased. After just 5 or 6 uses, light output would last only 90 seconds or so, and the brightness level also decreased. It soon became too much hassle to try to sustain light output for more than a few minutes - the frequent cranking was annoying, and every use further decreased battery life and light output.

The light's concept is appealing - but the implementation is poor. The light might be OK for a few uses, but based on the quick deterioration of performance I would not feel very confident that it would dependably work when needed and as long as needed in an emergency. Maybe the best use is in a car when you are unlikely to need light for a long period.

Another OPTION, if also less than perfect: Amazon is selling slow self-discharge rechargeable NiMH batteries. These cells retain 85% of their charge level after 1 year of sitting on a shelf. So, there is the option of buying Sanyo Eneloop (or similar) AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries and adding them to a few quality flashlights. Recharge once per year, and you have viable emergency lights, and perhaps keep some extra batteries around. These long shelf-life batteries are selling like hotcakes to photo enthusiasts, because you can immediately shoot photos even if your camera has been stored for 12 days or 12 months.

Digital camera Review: Outstanding Flashlight
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked up one at a local drug store (rhymes with smallgreens) for only fifteen bucks. Works way better than I expected. I wound it for one minute the first night
and it is at full brightness two weeks later.

The three LEDs are extremely bright. Bright enough to blind you if you look straight
at them.

Definite five star product. I wish they would make more products like this.
