Digital camera reviews of Emerson CKS3516 SmartSet Dual-Alarm Clock Radio with Time Projection SystemDigital camera Review: A couple of cool features Summary: 4 Stars
My mother had been using a "talking clock" next to her bed, but began misunderstanding what the clock was saying and was getting up in the middle of the night thinking it was time to rise and shine. So I bought this for her thinking the subtle projected time on the wall or ceiling would be better. She loves it. And even closes her curtains and door so she can turn the projector on when she takes a nap.
The projected time does work well and the light it emits is not intrusive at all. The other neat thing is that the clock resets itself automatically if it's unplugged or if the power is interrupted. No playing with buttons to get it right.
On the downside: the radio is barely adequate, as one might expect, and the glow from the digital display, even when dimmed, is bright and does illuminate at least part of the room. The model my mother has is black with blue digital display which I thought might have been fainter than red. She has resorted to placing something over it to block the glow. Having to do this doesn't bother her. It would me.
But if you can live with an iffy radio and a bright digital display, the projection feature of this clock is great and worth the price of admission. If the radio feature is important to you, other choices may be better.
Digital camera Review: A great buy! Summary: 5 Stars
We use this as a radio alarm clock. The projection time is a great feature!
Digital camera Review: A great clock radio Summary: 4 Stars
This is the second Emerson SmartSet radio I have bought. The first was for my wife and myself, the second for my mother. I like the long-life battery backup (It's a button battery -- Lithium or something) and the fact that it automatically switches from Standard time to Daylight Saving time in the spring and back in the fall. And once you get it set you can travel within the US and just set it to a new time zone you travel in. (This is AC-powered, so you have to plug it in) The display tells you the day of the week -- a blessing for my mother who never seems to know what day it is. The dual alarms are very convenient. You can set two alarms every day if you and your spouse get up at different times, or you can set one alarm time for weekdays and a different one for weekends. One improvement I noted was the time projection feature. After a power failure you have to fool around with the on/off feature to get it going again on the first one we purchased several years ago. On the newly purchased one all you have to do is push the projection on/off button once and it's on.
Digital camera Review: A real disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
The numbers in the projection feature slowly started to "fall apart"; that is, to lose their digital parts. Thus, the "7" became a "1"; the "4" became a couple of strange dashes, and so on. After a few months the projection feature was completely worthless. The other parts of the clock may have been all right, but we only bought the clock to have the time projected on the ceiling.
This clock was as useful as a having a rock on our nightstand.
Would I recommend this clock to a friend? Definitely not.
Digital camera Review: Alright Clock Summary: 4 Stars
This is an alright clock as for as display goes. The projector is pretty useless. Mine died after 2 weeks and just doesn't project anymore. Well, sometimes it works for maybe a day, then it shows the symptoms of death which will be one by one, the lines in the numbers will fade away and dissapear, then it won't work for a couple of weeks. This will be the last projecting alarm clock I buy for quite some time. I don't know if it's the technology's fault or if the company just delivered a shotty product with a hyped up description; either way its useless. Other than that, if you look into the numbers on the actual clock, you can see a brightness in the center of each red line and then it kind of fades to the ends (you can kind of see it in the picture). It doesn't make for a solid, crisp time when you look at it as a whole.
Nevertheless, it gets the job done. I like the two alarms and how when they go off, they don't just blare from the start but instead fade from soft to louder and louder. I'm usually awake when it's still soft and it's much more pleasant.
