Digital camera reviews of Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Color Scanner

Digital camera Review: Great scanner - but takes time to get best results
Summary: 4 Stars

I have had this scanner for a year now and have scanned thousands of negatives and pictures with it. There is no doubt it can create amazing results, but it will take time for most people to maximize the output.

The included Epson software is quite simple and quite good. It will give any starter reasonable results at first. However, for more demanding scans - especially negative scans - it would be a mistake to rely on the included Epson software. In stead you will need to move on to Silverfast or another 3.rd party software.

I use Silverfast SE Archive Suit with HDRi. It uses multiscanning to draw most color from your scans and also scans in infrared light to eliminate dust etc. much faster - and better - than anything ICE can achieve. In fact this combo (Epson 750 & Silverfast SE Archive Suit with HDRi) is so strong that it is hard to believe the difference until you have tried it yourself. The downside? Well, first of all Silverfast is not easy to learn to use. Also, the price for the Archive Suit is high - even when you upgrade. Is it worth it? You bet - if you scan negatives!

Bottom line, can work for everyone, but is really a product for those that are looking at high end scans and are willing to invest time in learning how to use it for the best results. So not for everyone. Four stars since you need an external software upgrade to get the amazing results of its infra red scan ability. Only regret: that I have a lot of early scans that could be much better now that I know much more about scanning.

Digital camera Review: Great scanner, but not without flaws
Summary: 4 Stars

Folks buy this scanner mostly for scanning transparencies, and expect "drum scan" performance levels from it. It simply does not deliver anything anywhere close to drum scan. That said, for large format film, this is the cheapest acceptable option and the results are pretty darn good if you know what you're doing. For medium format and 35mm you should purchase dedicated scanners, this one simply won't cut it.

So, to recap, great scanner for large format slides and flat reflective originals. Look elsewhere for decent scans of 35mm, MF slides or negatives.

Digital camera Review: Great scanner, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

The Epson V750 is a great scanner. We bought it for film and slide scanning and have not been disappointed in its performance. It's fast, has fantastic resolution (rivaling much more expensive film scanners) and will do multiple slides or negative strips. The "but" refers to the included software. The Epson scanning software is quite good, but I had hoped to be able to use the SilverFast package, which was supposed to be a full software package. Unfortunately, it's a "crippled" application, lacking the ability to convert multiple slides in a single scan into individual pictures (which the full application CAN do). This was a major disappointment. So, hardware great, software not so much.

Digital camera Review: Nice scans and features
Summary: 5 Stars

This product has completely met my expectations so far. (I have not yet attempted any wet mounting, however.) I also considered the Epson V700 flatbed scanner, but in retrospect, I am glad that I got this model largely because of the excellent Silverfast software included in the package. If one already has the full Silverfast program, he or she might consider the less expensive Epson. Overall, I'm pleased.

Digital camera Review: Only if you want the best.
Summary: 5 Stars

The scanner is GREAT! It's only for people who want the best without spending thousands on a drum scanner. The software is a little tricky at first but there are "how to" videos for each step. It only took a little time to figure it out. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for the best and has some computer knowledge. You will also need a computer that is up to date because the software uses a lot of memory (RAM).

Be sure to warm up the scanner 30 minutes prior to use. Also calibrate your monitor, scanner, and printer with the software provided before you get started.

Our family wanted to transfer all the slides, negatives, positives, and such to a digital format. So far it has done a great job.
